Lichess MCP is a tool that enables interaction with the Lichess gaming platform through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Users can manage board games, analyze game situations, and perform various gaming - related operations on Claude Desktop using natural language.

📦 Installation

1. Install Dependencies

Please follow these steps to install the required dependencies:

npm install -g lichess-mcp

2. Configure Environment Variables

There are two ways to set the Lichess API token:

Method 1: Use a .env file

Create a .env file in the project root directory and add the following content. Replace your - lichess - api - token with your actual API token:

LICHESS_TOKEN=your-lichess-api-token

Method 2: Configure at runtime

Set the token using the set_token function in your code:

3. Build and Install

Build the project and install it as a global package:

npm install -g

4. Start the Server (Optional)

If you need to run the MCP server independently, execute the following command:

npm start

Configure Claude Desktop

To integrate Lichess MCP with Claude Desktop, follow these steps:

1. Open the configuration file of Claude Desktop:

   • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
   • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
   • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add the following content to the configuration file. Replace your - lichess - api - token with your actual token:

3. Optional: If you need to add other MCP servers (e.g., for filesystem access), add them in the following format:

4. Restart Claude Desktop and ensure that the MCP server is correctly connected. A hammer icon will be displayed in the interface, indicating that the MCP server is connected.

5. Test: Try asking Claude to query your Lichess profile or start a new game:

   • "Show me my Lichess profile"
   • "Start a new chess game with 10 minutes time control"

🔧 Troubleshooting

If you encounter problems, check the following:

1. Ensure that lichess-mcp is installed globally.
2. Verify that the lichess-mcp command is available in the PATH (which lichess-mcp).
3. Ensure that the configuration file is in the correct format and use the mcpServers field instead of the old mcp_servers format.
4. Try restarting Claude Desktop completely and then try again.
5. Enable developer mode to get more log information.
