📦 Installation

Prerequisites

• Node.js version 18+ installed.
• A Pinata account with the corresponding API key (JWT).

Installation Steps

The installation method varies depending on whether you are using Claude Code or Claude Desktop.

Claude Code Run claude mcp add and follow the prompts to enter the following information:

Server Name: pinata
Server Scope: Project or Global
Server Command: npx
Command Arguments: pinata-mcp /specified_folder_path /another_specified_folder_path
Environment Variables: PINATA_JWT=<your_JWT_key>, GATEWAY_URL=example.mypinata.cloud

Claude Desktop Add the following configuration to the claude_desktop_config.json file:

💻 Usage Examples

Basic Usage

After starting Claude Code or opening Claude Desktop, you can start using it. The following are the available operations:

File Operations

• Upload files to Pinata (public or private IPFS).
• Search for files by name, CID, or MIME type.
• Get file details by querying with the ID.
• Update file metadata including name and key - value pairs.
• Delete files from Pinata.

Group Operations

• List groups with optional filtering conditions.
• Create new groups for organizing files.
• Get group information by querying with the ID.
• Update group profiles.
• Delete groups.
• Add/remove files to/from specified groups.

Content Access

• Generate private download links to access private files.
• Retrieve content from the IPFS gateway with an option to save locally.

Advanced Usage

Here are some example prompts to guide Claude in using pinata - mcp:

Upload an image to Pinata:
“Please upload the ~/Pictures/example.jpg file to my Pinata account as a private file named 'My Example Image'”

Search for files:
“Find all files in PNG format in my Pinata account”

Create a group and add files:
“Create a new group named 'Project Assets' on Pinata, then find all JSON files and add them to this group”

Retrieve content from IPFS:
“Extract the IPFS content with CID QmX... and save it to my download folder”
