🚀 Connecting Claude Conversations with AnkiConnect via MCP-ankiconnect MCP Server

Connect Claude conversations with AnkiConnect through MCP, making spaced repetition as simple as saying "Let's review today's flashcards" or "Create flashcards for this content".

🚀 Quick Start

Prerequisites

• Anki must be installed and running with the AnkiConnect plugin (Plugin ID: 2055492159).
  • If you're using a Mac, the AppSleep feature may slow down AnkiConnect. It's recommended to disable it by running the following commands:

    defaults write net.ankiweb.dtop NSAppSleepDisabled -bool true
    defaults write net.ichi2.anki NSAppSleepDisabled -bool true
    defaults write org.qt-project.Qt.QtWebEngineCore NSAppSleepDisabled -bool true
    

Installation

1. Install the AnkiConnect plugin in Anki:
   • Tools > Add-ons > Get Add-ons...
   • Enter the code: 2055492159
   • Restart Anki
2. Configure Claude Desktop:
   • For MacOS, edit the file at ~/Library/Application\ Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json.
   • For Windows, it's %APPDATA%/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json.
   • Add the following configuration:

3. Restart Anki and Claude Desktop

Debugging

Since the MCP server runs via standard input and output, debugging can be challenging. For the best debugging experience, we highly recommend using the MCP Debugging Tool. First, clone the repository and install the dependencies:

uv sync

You can start the MCP debugging tool via the mcp CLI:

uv run mcp dev mcp_ankiconnect/server.py

After starting, the debugging tool will display a URL in the browser where you can start debugging.

Tools

The server implements three tools:

• num_cards_due_today: Get the number of cards due today.
  • Optional deck parameter to filter by a specific deck.
  • Returns the number of due cards in all decks or the specified deck.
• get_due_cards: Get the cards that need to be reviewed.
  • Optional limit parameter (default value is 5) to control the number of cards.
  • Optional deck parameter to filter by a specific deck.
  • Optional today_only parameter (default value is true) to show only cards due today.
  • Returns cards in XML format containing questions and answers.
• submit_reviews: Submit the answers of the reviewed cards.
  • Receives a reviews list containing card_id and rating.
  • Ratings: wrong, hard, good, easy.
  • Returns feedback confirming the submission.
