The FastMCP SQL Server is designed to enable interaction with Microsoft SQL Server databases via a conversational AI interface. It leverages the FastMCP framework to offer tools for querying and manipulating SQL data, allowing users to interact with databases using natural language.

📦 Installation

Prerequisites

• Python 3.7+
• pyodbc
• asyncio
• FastMCP framework
• Microsoft SQL Server
• ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server

Steps

1. Install Python dependencies:

pip install pyodbc asyncio fastmcp

2. Ensure that Microsoft SQL Server and ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server are installed.
3. Configure connection parameters in the script:

💻 Usage Examples

Basic Usage

Run the server:

python mcp_sql_server.py

The server will initialize and connect to the specified SQL Server database.

Advanced Usage

The server provides several useful tools for database operations:

query_sql

Execute an SQL query and return the results.

query_sql(query: str = None) -> str

• If no query is provided, it defaults to SELECT * FROM [dbo].[Table_1].
• Returns the results as a formatted string.

list_tables

List all tables in the database.

list_tables() -> str

• Returns a list of table names as a string.

describe_table

Get the structure of a specific table.

describe_table(table_name: str) -> str

• table_name: The name of the table to describe.
• Returns information including column names and data types.

execute_nonquery

Execute an INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, or other non - query SQL statement.

execute_nonquery(sql: str) -> str

• sql: The SQL statement to execute.
• Returns the operation result, including the number of affected rows.
• Automatically handles transactions (commit/rollback).

list_odbc_drivers

List all ODBC drivers installed on the system.

list_odbc_drivers() -> str

• Returns a comma - separated list of installed ODBC drivers.

database_info

Get basic information about the connected database.

database_info() -> str

• Returns database version and configuration information.

🔧 Technical Details

Architecture

The server uses the asynchronous programming library asyncio in combination with the FastMCP framework to achieve efficient communication. Data queries are executed through pyodbc, and a connection pool is established with the database to optimize performance.

Error Handling

All database operations are wrapped in try - except blocks to catch exceptions and return user - friendly error messages.

Customization

To extend functionality, you can add new tools to the tools.py file and register them in the command dictionary of main.py.

Security Considerations

• Database connections use SSL encryption.
• Remote access is disabled by default.
• Support for authentication plugin extensions.

Troubleshooting

Unable to connect to the database
