Pinata MCP

🚀 Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server with Pinata for Claude

This integration enables Claude to access both public and private IPFS through Pinata's Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. It allows Claude to interact with public and private IPFS via Pinata's API.

After installing as described in the "Installation" section, start Claude Code or open Claude Desktop to begin using the integration.

📦 Installation

Prerequisites

• Node.js version 18 or higher installed.
• A Pinata account with a corresponding API key (JWT).

Installation Steps

The installation steps vary depending on whether you are using Claude Code or Claude Desktop.

Claude Code Run claude mcp add and follow the prompts to enter the following information:

Server Name: pinata
Server Scope: Project or Global
Server Command: npx
Command Arguments: pinata-mcp /allowed/directory/path /another/allowed/directory/path
Environment Variables: PINATA_JWT=<your JWT>, GATEWAY_URL=example.mypinata.cloud

Claude Desktop Add the following configuration to the claude_desktop_config.json file:

💻 Usage Examples

Basic Usage

Once Claude Code is started or Claude Desktop is opened, you can perform the following operations:

File Operations

• Upload a file to Pinata (public or private IPFS).
• Search for files by name, CID, or MIME type.
• Get file details by ID.
• Update file metadata including name and key - value pairs.
• Delete a file from Pinata.

Group Operations

• List groups with optional filtering.
• Create a new group to organize files.
• Get group details by ID.
• Update group information.
• Delete a group.
• Add/remove files to/from a group.

Content Access

• Generate a private download link to access private files.
• Retrieve content from an IPFS gateway and optionally save it locally.

Here are some example prompts for guiding Claude to use pinata - mcp:

Upload an image to Pinata:
"Please upload the file ~/Pictures/example.jpg to my Pinata account as a private file named 'My Example Image'"

Search for files:
"Search for all PNG files in Pinata"

Create a group and add files:
