What is Supabase MCP Server?
Supabase MCP Server is a middleware service based on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which allows AI assistants (such as Cursor/Claude) to interact securely with your Supabase projects. Through standardized interfaces, AI can perform operations such as database queries, table structure management, and edge function deployment without directly exposing database credentials. How to use Supabase MCP Server?
Simply configure the server startup command in the AI client and provide your Supabase personal access token. The server supports multiple security modes, including project isolation and read-only mode, ensuring that AI assistants can only operate within the authorized scope.Applicable scenarios
Suitable for scenarios such as development assistance (automatically generating SQL/type definitions), production environment monitoring (log queries), and team collaboration (branch management). It is particularly suitable for teams that require AI assistance in database development.Main features
Project managementView/create/pause Supabase projects and obtain organization information (account-level permissions required).
Database operationsExecute SQL queries, manage table structure changes, and view extension and migration records.
Edge functionsDeploy and manage edge functions, supporting JavaScript/TypeScript code.
Branch management (experimental)Create development branches, merge changes, and resolve migration conflicts (paid plan required).
Type generationAutomatically generate TypeScript type definitions for front-end development.
Advantages and limitations
Advantages
Standardized interface: Unify the interaction between AI and Supabase through the MCP protocol.
Fine-grained permission control: Support project isolation and read-only mode to ensure security.
Development efficiency: AI can automatically complete repetitive database operations.
Multi-client support: Compatible with mainstream AI development tools such as Cursor/Claude.
Limitations
Pre-release stage: Interface changes may occur before version 1.0.
Windows compatibility: Additional configuration of the PATH environment variable is required.
Branch function: Experimental features require a paid plan.
How to use
Get an access token
Create a personal access token (PAT) on the [Account Settings → Tokens] page of the Supabase dashboard.
Configure the client
Add the MCP server startup command to the AI assistant configuration (see the example on the right).
Security mode (optional)
Add --project-ref to limit the project scope, or --read-only to enable read-only mode.
Usage examples
Database design assistanceAI automatically creates database table structures based on natural language descriptions.
Production problem diagnosisQuery recent error logs to analyze API performance issues.
Type-safe developmentAutomatically generate front-end TypeScript type definitions.
