🚀 GitHub Easy-to-Install MCP Server

Have you ever been troubled by the environment configuration of AI models for days? Have you ever been at a loss when faced with a screen full of red ERROR messages? Are you tired of switching between seeking help from LLMs and manually entering modification commands?

Our innovative NLP project (Star and Play) automates the installation process of GitHub repositories using the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This system consists of two components: a GitHub MCP server that analyzes repositories and generates installation commands, and a local CLI MCP server that provides intelligent error handling through LLM integration. This solution simplifies the usually complex repository installation process into a seamless experience.

Introduction to MCP

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open protocol standard in the field of large language models (LLMs) introduced by Anthropic. Its goal is to address the integration challenges between LLMs and their external data sources, tools, or services through a standardized interaction mechanism. Simply put, MCP allows LLM-based chat systems to use multiple tools in a more unified way.

When a user asks a question:

1. The client (e.g., Claude Desktop or Cursor) sends your question to the LLM (e.g., Claude).
2. Through prompt engineering, the LLM analyzes available tools and decides which tool (or multiple tools) to use.
3. The selected tool is executed through the MCP server.
4. The result of the tool execution is returned to the LLM.
5. The LLM combines the execution result to construct the final prompt and generates a natural language response.
6. The response is finally presented to the user.

Implementation Process

Our project mainly consists of two components: the GitHub server and the local CLI server. Users can use the VSCode extension (i.e., Cline) or use Claude Desktop as the client. The LLM will call our servers in sequence.

When performing a task, we first make a standard attempt. If it succeeds, the task is completed; if it fails, we seek the LLM for correction. If the correction is successful, the task is completed; if it still fails, we turn to the relevant community to provide more information to the LLM. If the error still cannot be corrected, the task fails.

GitHub Server

1. Input the repository URL.
2. Identify key files (README.md, requirements.txt, environment.yml) through git cloning.
3. The LLM retrieves data from the server via MCP and generates an executable file.

Existing Methods:

There are already servers that retrieve information (such as structure or basic information) from GitHub repositories.

Improvement:

We aim to improve its accuracy and efficiency, specifically for the installation process, and generate standardized commands.

Local CLI Server

1. The LLM calls the CLI server to run script files or commands.
2. The server also collects system outputs (such as error or success messages). We plan to use NLP-related models to analyze the content locally → reducing the interaction time with the LLM and token consumption.
3. The organized information is passed to the LLM, and the modified commands are re - input into the local CLI server.

Existing Methods:

There are already servers that run script files or commands.

Improvement:

We plan to focus on developing an analysis model for system outputs. The error correction mechanism should be an innovation of our MCP server.

Optional Further Applications

1. We can collect error information during the installation process to improve future installation processes.
2. Provide more detailed logging and reporting functions to help users better understand installation issues.

Challenges

1. Complexity: Implementing the MCP protocol is complex and requires handling the coordination and communication between multiple components.
2. Performance Optimization: Ensure the system runs efficiently under high loads.
3. Error Handling: Design effective mechanisms to handle various possible errors and exceptions.

Evaluation and Testing

1. Function Testing: Verify that each component (GitHub server and local CLI server) works properly.
2. Performance Testing: Evaluate the system's response time and stability under high loads.
3. User Experience Testing: Collect user feedback to optimize the usability of the installation process.
