Dazzaji MCP Client Server

🚀 Running the MCP Client

Before running this client, ensure that the server is up and running. For more information, refer to: https://github.com/dazzaji/filesystem

📦 Step 1: Create a Virtual Environment and Install Dependencies Correctly

Use the following commands:

mkdir mcp-client-py
cd mcp-client-py

python -m venv venv
source venv/bin/activate

pip install -r requirements.txt

These commands create a virtual environment, activate it, and then install mcp and python-dotenv (along with their dependencies) into the environment.

⚙️ Step 2: Confirm or Adjust Environment Variables in the .env File

Create a .env file to specify the server path and allowed directories. You can also specify testing tools and parameters.

SERVER_PATH=/Users/dazzagreenwood/filesystem/dist/index.js
ALLOWED_DIRECTORY=/Users/dazzagreenwood/mcp-hello/module1/files

# Use the following parameters for testing:
#TOOL=list_directory
#ARGS='{"path": "/Users/dazzagreenwood/mcp-hello/module1/files", "recursive": true}'

# Or use other tools for testing
#TOOL=read_file
#ARGS='{"path": "/Users/dazzagreenwood/mcp-hello/module1/files/test.txt"}'

💻 Step 3: Run the Python Client

Run your client to test the server.

python client.py

• If you specified the optional TOOL and ARGS in the .env file, add these parameters like this:

python client.py --tool "list_directory" --args '{"path": "/Users/dazzagreenwood/mcp-hello/module1/files", "recursive": true}'

This operation will:

• Connect to your file system server.
• List the available tools.
• Call write_file to create a test file in the specified directory if no tool is specified in the .env file.
• Display the results to the console.

✅ Step 4: Verify the Results

After successfully running the client, check the following:

1. Client Output: You should see output similar to Available tools: [ ... ] and the results of each operation.
2. File Creation: Confirm that the test file was correctly created in the specified directory.

Following the above instructions, you can test the MCP server and client using various tools with Python and TypeScript/Node.js!

🧪 Testing Workflow

🏁 Start the Server

1. Open a terminal window and navigate to your server project directory.
2. Start the server according to the instructions in https://github.com/dazzaji/filesystem.

🧪 Test with the Client

1. Use the list_directory tool:

python client.py --server-path /Users/dazzagreenwood/filesystem/dist/index.js --allowed-directory /Users/dazzagreenwood/mcp-hello/module1/files --tool list_directory --args '{"path": "/Users/dazzagreenwood/mcp-hello/module1/files", "recursive": true}'

2. Use the read_file tool:

python client.py --server-path /Users/dazzagreenwood/filesystem/dist/index.js --allowed-directory /Users/dazzagreenwood/mcp-hello/module1/files --tool read_file --args '{"path": "/Users/dazzagreenwood/mcp-hello/module1/files/test.txt"}'

• Adjust the paths as needed to suit your local environment.

If configured correctly, you should be able to see the output of each operation, confirming its successful execution.
