🚀 United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Patent MCP Server

This is a FastMCP server that accesses USPTO data through the Patent Public Search API and the Open Data Portal (ODP) API. Here is detailed information about this server:

Public Patent Search (ppubs.uspto.gov)

• ppubs_search_patents: Search for granted patents in the USPTO public search.
• ppubs_search_applications: Search for published patent applications in the USPTO public search.
• ppubs_get_full_document: Retrieve full patent document information from ppubs.uspto.gov via GUID.
• ppubs_get_patent_by_number: Get the full - text of a granted patent from ppubs.uspto.gov by number.
• ppubs_download_patent_pdf: Download patent files in PDF format from the USPTO public search (currently not supported by Claude Desktop).

Open Data Portal API (api.uspto.gov)

• get_app(app_num): Get basic information about a specific patent application.
• search_applications(...): Search for patent applications in the open data portal using query parameters.
• download_applications(...): Download patent application data that meets the query criteria.
• get_app_metadata(app_num): Get the metadata of a specific patent application.
• get_app_adjustment(app_num): Get the term adjustment information of a specific patent application.
• get_app_assignment(app_num): Get the assignment information of a specific patent application.
• get_app_attorney(app_num): Get the attorney or agent information of a specific patent application.
• get_app_continuity(app_num): Get the continuity information of a specific patent application.
• get_app_foreign_priority(app_num): Get the foreign priority claims of a specific patent application.
• get_app_transactions(app_num): Get the transaction history of a specific patent application.
• get_app_documents(app_num): Get detailed document information of a specific patent application.
• get_app_associated_documents(app_num): Get other documents associated with a specific patent application.
• get_status_codes(...): Search for status codes.
• search_datasets(...): Search for dataset products in the open data portal.
• get_dataset_product(...): Get information about a specific dataset product by identifier.

📦 Installation and Configuration

Clone the Repository

Clone the project repository using the following commands:

git clone [Repository Link]
cd uspto - patent - mcp - server

Set Environment Variables

Create and edit the config.json file in the project root directory and add the following content:

💻 Usage Examples

Direct Use

Run the server via the command line:

uv run server.py

Integration with Claude Desktop

1. Open the developer settings in Claude Desktop.
2. Add the path and port information of the MCP server to the configuration file.

🧪 Testing

The test scripts are located in the /test/ directory and include the following:

• test_patents.py: Tests that directly make HTTP requests to the ppubs.uspto.gov and api.uspto.gov endpoints.
• test_tools.py: A complete test suite for tool functionality.

Run the tests:

uv run test/test_tools.py
