Tools

search_stackoverflow

Search for programming questions and answers on Stack Overflow.

• Parameters:
  • query (required): Search query string
  • limit (optional): Maximum number of results (1 - 10, default: 5)
• Returns: A formatted list of questions with scores, answer counts, and excerpts
• Results are cached for 1 hour

search_mdn

Search for web development documentation on MDN Web Docs.

• Parameters:
  • query (required): Search query string
• Returns: The top 5 MDN document matches, including summaries and links
• Results are cached for 1 hour

search_github

Search for code repositories or users on GitHub.

• Parameters:
  • query (required): Search query string
  • limit (optional): Maximum number of results (1 - 10, default: 5)
• Returns: A list containing repository names, descriptions, and star counts
• Results are cached for 1 hour

search_npm

Search for JavaScript packages on npm.

• Parameters:
  • query (required): Search query string

📦 Installation

Install using Smithery

npx smithery install @nahmanmate/code-research-mcp-server

Manual Installation

1. Clone the repository:

   git clone https://github.com/yourusername/code-research-mcp-server.git
   cd code-research-mcp-server
   

2. Install dependencies:

   npm install
   

3. Start the server:

   node index.js
   

Configure MCP Settings

Add the following configuration to package.json:

Run in Development Mode

With automatic rebuild functionality:

npm run watch

Debugging

Debugging is challenging as MCP servers communicate via standard input/output. Use the MCP inspector for detailed request/response monitoring:

npm run inspector

The inspector provides:

Access the provided URL in your browser to get the debugging interface.

Caching

Use node-cache for caching:

• Default TTL: 1 hour
• Independent cache keys for each query/limit combination
