A Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that provides access to CoinMarketCap cryptocurrency data. This server enables AI-driven applications to retrieve lists of cryptocurrencies, quotes, and detailed information about various tokens.

This server allows you to access CoinMarketCap cryptocurrency data. You can use different tools to retrieve various information about cryptocurrencies.

Available Tools

• listing-coins - Get a paginated list of all active cryptocurrencies and their latest market data.

  • start (integer, optional): The starting position of the paginated list results (1-based index).
  • limit (integer, optional): The number of results to return (default: 10, maximum: 5000).
  • price_min (number, optional): The minimum USD price to filter results.
  • price_max (number, optional): The maximum USD price to filter results.
  • market_cap_min (number, optional): The minimum market capitalization to filter results.
  • market_cap_max (number, optional): The maximum market capitalization to filter results.
  • convert (string, optional): Calculate market quotes in multiple currencies.
  • sort (string, optional): Sort cryptocurrencies by a field.
  • sort_dir (string, optional): The direction to sort cryptocurrencies (asc or desc).

• get-coin-info - Retrieve detailed information about a specific cryptocurrency.

  • id (string, optional): One or more CoinMarketCap cryptocurrency IDs, separated by commas.
  • slug (string, optional): A list of cryptocurrency slugs separated by commas.
  • symbol (string, optional): One or more cryptocurrency symbols, separated by commas.

• get-coin-quotes - Get the latest market quotes for one or more cryptocurrencies.

  • id (string, optional): One or more CoinMarketCap cryptocurrency IDs, separated by commas.
  • slug (string, optional): A list of cryptocurrency slugs separated by commas.
  • symbol (string, optional): One or more cryptocurrency symbols, separated by commas.

📦 Installation

Installation via Smithery

To automatically install CoinMarketCap data for Claude Desktop, use Smithery:

npx -y @smithery/cli install coin-api-mcp --client claude

Building the Server

Clone this repository and build and install the program using the default Python interpreter:

git clone https://github.com/longmans/coin_api_mcp.git
cd coin_api_mcp
uv build
uv pip install .

After installation, you can run it as a script using the following command:

python -m coin_api_mcp

Configuration

API Key

The server requires a CoinMarketCap API key to run. You can provide the API key in two ways:

1. As an environment variable:

export COINMARKETCAP_API_KEY=your_api_key_here

2. As a command-line argument:

python -m coin_api_mcp --api-key your_api_key_here

Settings in Claude.app

To configure in Claude.app, add the following to config.json:

Debugging

Debug information can be viewed using logging tools, for example:

python -m coin_api_mcp --debug
