The Claude MCP server provides access to the USGS Earthquake API.

This MCP server is implemented to provide access to the USGS Earthquake API in Claude Desktop.

Overview

This Model Context Protocol (MCP) server enables AI assistants and applications to:

• Retrieve earthquake data through various search parameters.
• Obtain detailed information about specific earthquakes.

Users can run queries using natural language.

📦 Installation

Installation via Smithery

To automatically install USGS earthquake data via Smithery:

npx -y @smithery/cli install @blake365/usgs-quakes-mcp --client claude

Manual Installation

Manual installation can be challenging if you're not familiar with Node.js and the MCP protocol.

1. Install Node.js.
2. Clone this repository into a folder on your local machine.
3. Since the server is already built, you can skip the build step.

Additional Steps

If you want to modify the server, you can edit the src/index.ts file.

• Run npm install to install dependencies.
• Run npm run build to build the server.
• Exit and restart Claude Desktop after making modifications.

Connecting to Claude Desktop

1. Open your Claude Desktop configuration file path:

   • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
   • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add the server configuration:

3. Exit and restart Claude Desktop.

After restarting, you should see a small hammer icon in the bottom - right corner of the text box. Hover over the icon to see the number of available MCP tools.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter errors when running the server, you may need to provide the full path to the node command. For example, on macOS: /usr/local/bin/node
