🚀 Claude MCP Data Explorer (for Windows)

This is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server implemented in TypeScript, designed for data exploration integrated with Claude. The server offers the capabilities to load CSV files and execute JavaScript data analysis scripts, supporting advanced data analysis.

🚀 Quick Start

Prerequisites

• Node.js v16+ - Download Node.js
• Claude Desktop Application - Download Claude Desktop

📦 Installation (Updated Version for Windows)

1. Clone this repository

git clone https://github.com/tofunori/claude-mcp-data-explorer.git
cd claude-mcp-data-explorer

2. Install dependencies

npm install

3. Build and run the setup script

npm run setup

This command will:

• Compile TypeScript code to JavaScript.
• Configure the Claude Desktop Application to use the compiled JavaScript.
• Create the necessary directories.

4. Close and restart the Claude Desktop Application, then enable Developer Mode

• Completely close the Claude Desktop Application.
• Start the Claude Desktop Application.
• Go to the Help menu → Enable Developer Mode.

Manual Testing

You can directly test the server by running the following commands:

npm run build
npm run start

If the server starts without errors, it means the Claude Desktop Application can use the server.

How It Works

This MCP server provides two main tools for Claude:

1. load-csv - Load CSV data into memory for analysis.
2. run-script - Execute JavaScript code to process and analyze data. It also includes a prompt template to guide Claude through a structured data analysis process.

💻 Usage Examples

Basic Usage

1. Start the Claude Desktop Application
2. Select the "Explore Data" prompt template
   • After installation, this prompt will appear in the Claude Desktop Application.
3. Enter the CSV file path and analysis topic
   • Example file path: C:/Users/YourName/Documents/data.csv
   • Example topic: "Sales trends by region"
4. Let Claude perform data analysis
   • Claude will automatically load the CSV file and generate insights.
   • The server processes large files in chunks to ensure efficient operation.

Troubleshooting

Claude does not display the MCP server

• Check the configuration file: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
• Ensure it points to the compiled JavaScript file in the dist directory.
• Try rebuilding the project using npm run build.
• After enabling Developer Mode, check the MCP log file (Developer → Open MCP Log File).
• Use "Reload all MCP servers" to force a refresh.

Permission error when reading a file

• Ensure that Claude has access to the CSV file path.
• Try using an absolute path, including slashes (/) or escaped backslashes (\\).

Errors in JavaScript scripts

• Check if the script is compatible with the allowed modules.
• Review any error information provided in the Claude response.
