🚀 Who is the MCP Server

This MCP server allows AI agents such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, and Windsurf to directly perform WHOIS queries and retrieve detailed domain name information. You can check whether a domain is available, who owns it, and important information such as registration and expiration dates without opening a browser.

Purpose You can directly ask the AI to check whether a domain is available, whose it is, when it was registered, and other important details. There's no need to open a browser for a search.

What is a WHOIS Query?

A WHOIS query is a process of querying the WHOIS database to retrieve registration information about a domain name, IP address, or autonomous system (AS). It helps users understand who owns a certain domain, when it was registered, when it expires, and obtain other important information.

What Information Can a WHOIS Query Provide?

When performing a WHOIS query, you can obtain the following detailed information:

• Domain Name - The specific domain name being queried.
• Registrar Name - The company that manages the domain name registration (e.g., GoDaddy, Namecheap).
• Registrant Details - The name, organization, and contact information of the domain name owner (unless protected by WHOIS privacy).
• Registration and Expiration Dates - The registration time and expiration time of the domain name.
• Name Servers - The DNS servers used by the domain name.
• Domain Status - Active, expired, locked, or pending deletion.
• Contact Information - Administrative, technical, and service contacts (if not hidden).

Usage in Cursor

Global Installation

Run the MCP server:

npx -y @mcp-server/whois-mcp@latest

In your Cursor IDE:

1. Go to Cursor Settings > MCP.
2. Click + Add a new MCP server.
3. Fill out the form:
   • Name: Domain Query (or any other name).
   • Type: Command.
   • Command: npx -y @mcp-server/whois-mcp@latest.

Usage Method

After configuration, the WHOIS tool will be automatically available in the Cursor AI agent. You can:

1. The tool will be listed in Available Tools under MCP settings.
2. The agent will automatically use it in relevant situations.
3. You can explicitly ask the agent to send a notification.

Usage in Roo Code

Access the MCP settings of Roo Code by clicking "Edit MCP Settings" or using the command "Roo Code: Open MCP Configuration" in the VS Code command palette.

Debugging the Server

To debug the server, you can use the MCP Inspector.

First, build:

npm run build:watch

Then run the inspector:

npm run inspect

In another terminal window, you can run the server as usual.
