A research-level implementation of the Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that provides AI research capabilities by interacting with the Perplexity website without the need for an API key.

The Perplexing MCP Zerver is a research - level server implementation. It interacts with the Perplexity website to offer AI research features without requiring an API key.

🛠️ Tools

1. Search (search)

Execute search queries on Perplexity.ai. Supports brief, normal, or detailed response types. Returns plain text output.

2. Get Documentation (get_documentation)

Ask Perplexity to provide documentation and examples for technologies/libraries, with an optional specific context. Returns plain text output.

3. Find APIs (find_apis)

Ask Perplexity to find and evaluate APIs based on requirements and context. Returns plain text output.

4. Check Deprecated Code (check_deprecated_code)

Ask Perplexity to analyze deprecated features in code snippets within a specific technology context. Returns plain text output.

5. Extract URL Content (extract_url_content)

Extract the main article text from a URL using browser automation and Mozilla's Readability. Process GitHub repositories through gitingest.com. Supports recursive link exploration to a specified depth. Returns structured JSON containing content and metadata.

6. Chat (chat_perplexity)

Maintain a conversation with Perplexity AI. Locally store chat history in the chat_history.db file, which is in the project directory by default. Returns a stringified JSON object containing chat_id and response.

📦 Installation

Just copy 📋 and paste it into the README, and let the AI handle the rest.

1. Clone or download this repository:

git clone https://github.com/wysh3/perplexity-mcp-zerver.git
cd perplexity-mcp-zerver

2. Install dependencies:

npm install

3. Build the server:

npm run build

⚠️ Important Note

Make sure Node.js is installed. Puppeteer will download a compatible browser version during installation. Refer to the official documentation for more information.

⚙️ Configuration

Copy the built files to the /dist directory:

mkdir -p dist/{bin,public/{css,img,js}}

Create a .env file in the project root directory and add the following content:

PORT=3000

💻 Usage Examples

Basic Usage

Start the server:

node dist/bin/server.js

By default, the server will run on http://localhost:3000.
