library-mcp is an MCP server for interacting with Markdown knowledge bases. It enables users to manage and retrieve content from Markdown files efficiently, especially useful for those with multiple Markdown repositories and large - scale blog corpora.

🚀 Quick Start

library-mcp is an MCP server for interacting with Markdown knowledge bases. Essentially, it's a folder (with or without sub - folders) containing files with the .md extension and starting with metadata like this:

The typical workflow in the current version is:

• Retrieve the latest 50 pieces of content with specific tags and discuss how to handle issues: Get the next 50 posts with tag "executive", then tell me what I should do about this problem I am running into: ...
• Or operate within a date range: Summarize the blog posts I wrote in the past year.

One might reasonably ask, "Why not upload the entire blog in context?" There are two reasons:

1. My blog corpus is much larger than the context window of most current models. Moreover, even if the context window becomes extremely large, I've written a lot of mediocre content in the past, so skipping it might be a feature.
2. I have multiple different Markdown knowledge bases, and this allows me to work collaboratively among them.

Finally, this is a personal project designed to run on a local laptop. Using this software won't harm humans, and it works quite well!

This MCP server exposes the following tools:

Content Search Tools

Tools for retrieving content into your context window:

• get_by_tag - Retrieve content by tag
• get_by_text - Search for content with specific text
• get_by_slug_or_url - Find posts by slug or URL
• get_by_date_range - Retrieve posts published within a specified date range

Tag Management Tools

Tools for navigating the knowledge base:

• search_tags - Search for tags matching the query
• list_all_tags - List all tags sorted by the number of posts and time

Maintenance Tools

Tools for handling the operation of other tools:

• rebuild - Rebuild the content index. This is useful if you've added more content, edited existing content, etc.

📦 Installation

These instructions describe the installation for Claude Desktop on OS X. Other platforms should be similar.

1. Install Claude Desktop.
2. Clone library-mcp to a convenient location, say /Users/will/library-mcp.
3. Ensure uv is installed. You can follow these instructions to do so.
4. Open Claude Desktop, go to Settings -> Developer, and let it create your MCP configuration file. Then you need to update claude_desktop_config.json. (Note: Replace will with your own username, such as the output of the whoami command.)

   cd /Users/will/Library/Application Support/Claude
   vi claude_desktop_config.json
   

   Then add the following section:

5. Close Claude and then reopen it.
