🚀 Windows Crate Documentation Search MCP Project

This project offers a Claude Desktop MCP server that enables searching within the Rust windows namespace crate API documentation hosted on microsoft.github.io/windows-docs-rs.

It utilizes the Playwright framework to interact with the search functionality and feature tables of the documentation website.

• Search Windows API: Use the search_windows_api tool to find functions, structs, enums, etc., in the windows namespace crate documentation.
• Retrieve Documentation: Fetch detailed documentation for exact matches, including descriptions, signatures, and required Cargo features (best effort).
• Find Related Items: List related API items found during the search.

📦 Installation

This package requires the Playwright browser to be installed. The server will automatically attempt to install the default browser (chromium) on its first run. You can skip this step by setting the MCP_SKIP_PLAYWRIGHT_INSTALL environment variable.

🚀 Quick Start

Run the MCP Server with uvx

The simplest way to run the server is using uvx:

uvx windows-rs-mcp

Run Locally with uv

If you've cloned the repository, you can run the server directly from the project directory using uv run:

# cd /path/to/windows-rs-mcp (Linux/macOS)
# cd C:\path\to\your\project\windows-rs-mcp (Windows)

# Run the server
uv run windows-rs-mcp

Configuration in Claude Desktop

To use this MCP with Claude Desktop, add the following configuration to your Claude Desktop settings:

Option 1: Use uvx (Recommended)

🔧 Technical Details

Environment Variables

• MCP_SKIP_PLAYWRIGHT_INSTALL: Set to true, 1, or yes to skip the automatic installation check for the Playwright browser.
• MCP_PLAYWRIGHT_BROWSER: Specify the browser that Playwright should install (default is chromium). Other options include firefox and webkit.
