🚀 MCP Weather Server

A Model Context Protocol (MCP) server implemented in TypeScript, providing weather information tools via the Server-Sent Events (SSE) protocol.

🚀 Quick Start

This server implements the Model Context Protocol and offers weather forecast and warning tools to users through the SSE transport protocol. Different from the typical stdio standard example that uses local communication, this server demonstrates how to achieve remote connections via HTTP, allowing clients to connect over the network.

📦 Installation

Prerequisites

• Node.js (v16 or higher)
• npm or yarn package manager

Steps

# Clone the repository
git clone https://github.com/tyfeng1997/mcp-server.git
cd mcp-server

# Install dependencies
npm install

# Compile TypeScript code
npm run build

💻 Usage Examples

Start the Server

node build/index.js

This will run the server on port 3001 by default. You should see output similar to the following:

Weather MCP server is running at http://localhost:3001
Clients should connect to http://localhost:3001/sse

Available Tools

The server provides two tools:

Basic Usage

get-forecast

• Description: Retrieve the weather forecast for a specific location.
• Parameters:
  • latitude (number): The latitude of the location (-90 to 90).
  • longitude (number): The longitude of the location (-180 to 180).
• Note: Only supports the NWS API in the United States.

get-alerts

• Description: Retrieve weather warnings for a specific state.
• Parameters:
  • state (string): Two-letter US state code (e.g., CA, NY).

Test the Server

You can test if the server is running properly with the following command:

curl http://localhost:3001/sse

This will return an event with a session ID.

This server is designed to work with an MCP client, which can be found at tyfeng1997/mcp-client. The client connects to this server and allows AI assistants like Claude to use weather tools through natural language.

Custom Configuration

Port Configuration

To change the port, modify the PORT constant in the code:
