🚀 Building an MCP Cryptocurrency Price Query Server with the ALPACA API

This project establishes a cryptocurrency price query service powered by the ALPACA API, designed for integration with the MCP (Multi-Agent Control Protocol).

The server enables AI agents or clients to efficiently use Alpaca's API to obtain real-time cryptocurrency prices and market data.

🚀 Quick Start

📦 Step 1: Set Up the Environment with uv

We'll use uv, a fast and modern Python package manager, to create and manage the project environment.

🛠️ Installation and Setup

Run the following commands in the terminal (not in Jupyter):

# Install uv
curl -LsSf https://astral.sh/uv/install.sh | sh 

# Create and enter your project directory
mkdir mcp-crypto-server
cd mcp-crypto-server

# Initialize a new project
uv init

# Create and activate a virtual environment
uv venv
source .venv/bin/activate  # On Windows: .venv\Scripts\activate

# Install the required dependencies
uv add "mcp[cli]" httpx

Step 2: Run the MCP Server

After setting up the environment, we're ready to build and run the cryptocurrency price query tool. Copy the server script from the script folder:

cp ../mcp_server.py . 

Start the MCP server:
uv run mcp_server.py

The MCP-compatible server includes the following features:

• Retrieve real-time cryptocurrency prices (e.g., BTC/USD, ETH/USD)
• Access market data using Alpaca's REST API
• Provide fast, formatted responses for AI agents

Step 3: Configure the MCP Server

In the mcp_server.py file, locate the mcp.json configuration file and add the following content:

Step 4: Test the Server

After running the MCP server, you can test it with the following command:
