🚀 Tello Drone MCP Server

An implementation of the Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for controlling DJI Tello drones. This server allows any MCP-compatible client to control Tello drones through a standardized interface.

🚀 Quick Start

To start using the Tello Drone MCP Server, follow these steps:

1. Connect to your Tello drone's WiFi network (usually starting with "TELLO-").
2. Start the server:

python -m mcp server --config config.yaml

3. Visit http://localhost:8000 to view the documentation and API interfaces.

📦 Installation

1. Clone this repository:

git clone <repository-url>
cd drone-mcp

2. Install the dependencies:

pip install -r requirements.txt

MCP Configuration

To connect your MCP client to the Tello drone server, add the following configuration to the mcp.json file (usually located at ~/.cursor/mcp.json or in the project directory):

Use the HTTP or SSE interface to send takeoff or landing commands:

🔧 Technical Details

Error Handling

The server implements comprehensive error handling for the following scenarios:

• Drone connection failures
• Invalid commands
• Network timeouts
• Protocol errors
• Invalid tool parameters

All errors are logged and returned in a JSON-RPC 2.0 formatted error response.

Logging

The server outputs logs to stderr, including the following details:

• Server startup/shutdown status
• Drone connection status
• Command execution status
• Client connections
• Error conditions

Security Considerations

• The server requires root/sudo access to bind UDP ports.
• No authentication is implemented (relies on network security).
• CORS is enabled for all origins (*).
• Use only in a controlled environment.

Development

The server is built using the following technologies:

• Python's mcp library for protocol handling.
• Starlette for HTTP/SSE transmission.
• Uvicorn as the ASGI server.
• The native Python socket library for drone UDP communication.

Troubleshooting

1. Server fails to start:
   • Ensure you have sudo/root access.
   • Check if the Tello's WiFi is connected.
   • Verify that no other processes are occupying port 3000.
2. Drone fails to connect:
   • Ensure the drone is powered on.
   • Check the WiFi connection status.
   • Verify that no other applications are controlling the drone.
3. Command fails:
   • Check the drone's battery level.
   • Ensure the drone is in a safe flying environment.
   • Verify that the command parameters are within the allowed range.
