A Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that provides search and access to programming resources across multiple platforms. This server integrates popular developer platforms to assist Large Language Models (LLMs) in finding relevant code examples, documentation, and packages.

Tools

search_stackoverflow

Search for programming questions and answers on Stack Overflow.

• Parameters:
  • query (required): Search query string
  • limit (optional): Maximum number of results (1 - 10, default: 5)
• Returns: A formatted list of questions with ratings, answer counts, and excerpts
• Results are cached for 1 hour

search_mdn

Search the MDN Web Docs.

• Parameters:
  • query (required): Search query string
• Returns: The top 5 MDN document matches, including summaries and links
• Results are cached for 1 hour

search_github

Search for code repositories or content on GitHub.

• Parameters:
  • query (required): Search query string
  • language (optional): Specify the programming language
  • limit (optional): Maximum number of results (1 - 10, default: 5)
• Returns: A list containing repository names, descriptions, and relevant code snippets
• Results are cached for 1 hour

search_npm

Search for packages on npm.

• Parameters:
  • query (required): Search query string
  • limit (optional): Maximum number of results (1 - 10, default: 5)
• Returns: A list containing package names, versions, and descriptions
• Results are cached for 1 hour

search_pypi

Search for packages on PyPI.

• Parameters:
  • query (required): Search query string
  • limit (optional): Maximum number of results (1 - 10, default: 5)
• Returns: A list containing package names, versions, and descriptions
• Results are cached for 1 hour

search_all

Search all platforms simultaneously.

• Parameters:
  • query (required): Search query string
  • limit (optional): Maximum number of results per platform (1 - 10, default: 5)
• Returns: A combined list of results from all platforms, sorted by relevance
• Results are cached for 1 hour

📦 Installation

Automatic Installation (via Smithery)

npm install -g @nahmanmate/code-research-mcp-server

Manual Installation

1. Clone the repository:

   git clone https://github.com/nahmanmate/code-research-mcp-server.git
   cd code-research-mcp-server
   

2. Install dependencies:

   npm install
   

📚 Configuration

Configure default parameters in package.json, for example:

💻 Development

Run in Development Mode

With automatic rebuild on changes:

npm run dev

Error Handling

The server implements robust error handling:

• Specific error messages for each platform
• Rate limit handling for the GitHub API
• Graceful fallback when services are unavailable
• Cached responses to reduce API load

🔧 Debugging

Debugging is challenging since the MCP server communicates via stdio. Use the MCP Inspector for detailed request/response monitoring:

npm run debug

The Inspector provides:

• Real-time request/response monitoring
• Tool execution tracking
• Error stack traces
• Performance metrics

Access the provided URL in your browser to access the debugging interface.

🗃️ Caching

Use node-cache for result caching:

• Default expiration time: 1 hour
• Independent cache keys for each query/limit combination
• Platform-specific caching strategies
• Memory-efficient storage
