🚀 Metabase-Server MCP Server

A Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for integrating with Metabase.

This is a TypeScript-based implementation of the MCP server that supports integration with the Metabase API. It allows AI assistants to access the following features:

• Retrieve dashboards, questions/cards, and database resources in Metabase.
• Provide tools to list and execute Metabase queries.
• View and interact with Metabase data.

• Support the JSON content type for structured data access.

Tools

• list_dashboards - List all dashboards in Metabase.
• list_cards - List all cards/questions in Metabase.
• list_databases - List all databases in Metabase.
• execute_card - Execute a Metabase question/card and get the results.
• get_dashboard_cards - Get all cards in a dashboard.
• execute_query - Execute an SQL query on a Metabase database.

📚 Configuration

Before running the server, you need to set the following environment variables:

export METABASE_URL=https://your-metabase-instance.com
export METABASE_USERNAME=your_username
export METABASE_PASSWORD=your_password

You can set these environment variables via your shell configuration file or use the dotenv package in a .env file.

🚧 Development

Install dependencies:

npm install

Build the server:

npm run build

Develop with automatic rebuild:

npm run watch

📦 Installation

To use with Claude Desktop, add the server configuration:

On MacOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json On Windows: %APPDATA%/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

Note: You can also set these variables via system environment variables instead of in the configuration file.

Install using Smithery

To automatically install metabase-server via Smithery:

npx -y @smithery/cli install @imlewc/metabase-server --client claude

Debugging

Since the MCP server communicates via standard input/output, debugging can be challenging. We recommend using MCP Inspector, which is available as a package script:

npm run inspector

The Inspector will provide a URL to access browser debugging tools.
