🚀 Introduction to MCP

This repository contains an experimental Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for interacting with the Algolia API. This is a project we're sharing with you for exploration and experimentation. Feel free to use, fork, or build upon it—but note that it's not officially supported by Algolia and isn't covered by our SLA. We may update it, break it, or remove it entirely. If you customize or configure something, you might lose that work. Additionally, using MCP in a production environment may affect your Algolia experience.

If you have any feedback, ideas (or even code!), we'd love to hear from you. Just be clear: MCP isn't considered an "API client" for SLA purposes.

🚀 Quick Start

📦 Installation

First, follow the Quickstart Guide. This guide will install Claude Desktop and set up a file server MCP server. It's a great introduction to help you debug issues using the official guide.

Setting up the Prototype Algolia MCP Server

Requirements

• Go (https://go.dev/doc/install)

Clone the Repository and Build the Server

Clone the repository and build the mcp server:

$ git clone git@github.com:algolia/mcp.git
$ cd mcp/cmd/mcp
$ go build

We need to find the full path to the built server binary:

$ pwd
/path/to/the/repo/cmd/mcp

Note: When adding this command to the configuration, you must specify the binary and its path (/path/to/the/repo/cmd/mcp/mcp).

Update Settings to Point to the New Server

Edit the settings in Claude Desktop as shown here, and add the Algolia server definition at this time (using the binary path found earlier). The settings are as follows:

Replace <APP_ID>, <API_KEY>, and <INDEX_NAME> with your own Algolia application ID, API Key, and index name.

Start the MCP Server

Start the MCP server in the terminal:

$ go run mcp.go

This will start a server exposing endpoints like /search, /add, /update, and others, which you can use to interact with the Algolia index.
