This is a simple Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that uses the OpenWeatherMap API to provide real-time weather data. It is built with Node.js and designed to run in WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux).

This MCP weather server offers real - time weather data. First, ensure you meet the prerequisites, then install and configure the server as described below. Finally, you can run the server and query weather data.

🛠️ Prerequisites

• Cursor installed
• WSL enabled (e.g., Ubuntu or other Linux distributions)
• Node.js and npm installed in WSL
• OpenWeatherMap API key

📦 Installation

# Run in the WSL terminal
git clone https://github.com/your-username/mcp-weather-server
cd mcp-weather-server
npm install

🔐 Environment Setup

Create a .env file in the project root directory:

WHETHER_API_KEY=your_openweather_api_key_here

🌱 The server will use dotenv to read this key.

Basic Usage

MCP Configuration (in Cursor)

In your Cursor's mcp.json (or settings UI), use the following configuration:

✅ Note: When using wsl, the env key may not work properly. Use the .env file instead.

Advanced Usage

Running the Server

Create a new MCP client in Cursor and use the demo server. Then run the following query:

getWhetherByCityName({ name: "London" })

The server will return the current weather data for the specified city.
