🚀 MCP Server Configuration Guide (for Finding References)

This guide provides a comprehensive overview of configuring, using, and testing the MCP server, along with future feature plans.

🚀 Quick Start

Server Configuration

1. Add the server to AMP using http://localhost:3001 and name it get-text-matches.
2. Start the server by running the command node server.js.

✨ Features

The MCP server supports two tools, both of which recursively traverse all files in the specified directory:

• get-text-matches: Returns a list of {file, line, column} indicating the locations of exact text matches.
• get-parse-tree: Returns the parse tree metadata for the specified string.

📦 Installation

Create Example Client Files

To begin, run the following command in a new directory to create example client files:

mkdir client && cd client && echo -e "import { temp_x } from './scope.js';\n\ntemp_x = 5;\n\ntemp_x = 7 + 4;\n\nconsole.log(temp_x);" > include_scope.js && echo -e "let temp_x = 5;\n\ntemp_x = 7 + 4;\n\nconsole.log(temp_x);" > exclude_scope.js && echo -e "let temp_x = \"Hello\";\n\nif(true){\n    let temp_x = 10;\n    console.log(temp_x);\n}\n\ntemp_x = \"World\";\n\n{\n    temp_x;\n}" > scope.js

💻 Usage Examples

get-text-matches

Prompt the MCP server to execute the following command: use the get-text-match tool to find temp_x, specify the full path

get-parse-tree

Prompt the MCP server to execute the following command: use the get-parse-tree tool to find temp_x, specify the full path

Subsequent prompts can be used, such as: what are the different node types of temp_x what type of variable is temp_x where is temp_x defined in include_scope and where is temp_x defined in exclude_scope

These prompts can be combined into more complex queries, for example: what variable type is temp_x in the scope of include_scope

⚠️ Important Note

The client can directly access relevant files. Currently, it needs to be told to use the get-text-match and get-parse-tree tools.

💡 Usage Tip

If the MCP server selects the wrong tool, you can instruct it not to use a specific tool. For example: use the parse tree tool, not get text, to find temp_x, specify the full path

Sometimes, specifying the full path is not necessary, but occasionally it may set the current directory to ., so explicit specification may be required. The MCP server must trust the local directory that the client tells it to check. If necessary, the path can be hard-coded.

1. Implement case-insensitive matching.
2. Allow ignoring specific files/folders. For example, searching for "import" in a directory containing node_modules may exceed the token limit.
3. Provide a more beautiful and concise output format for parse trees.
