🚀 Using the Searx Search Engine with the MCP Protocol

Searx is an open-source, decentralized search engine that supports interaction through the MCP (Machine Control Protocol) interface. This document will guide you on how to configure and run Searx in combination with the MCP protocol.

📦 Installation

To get started, install the necessary tools by following these steps:

1. Python Environment
   • Install Python (version 3.6 or higher is recommended).
   • Install pip:

     python get-pip.py
     

2. Install Dependencies
   • Use pip to install the project dependencies:

     pip install -r requirements.txt
     

⚙️ Configuration

Make the following configurations in the config.yml file:

# Searx Settings
searx:
  instance_name: "My Searx Instance"

▶️ Running

Using Docker

Quick Run (Without Installation)

Run directly using the following command:

docker run -d --name searx-mcp -p 8080:8080 -p 8081:8081 searx/mcp-server

Using Docker Compose

Create a docker-compose.yml file and add the following content:

services:
  searx-mcp:
    image: searx/mcp-server
    ports:
      - "8080:8080"
      - "8081:8081"

Then run:

docker-compose up --detach

Custom Configuration

Adjust the behavior by setting environment variables:

• SEARX_MCP_HOST: Specify the host address of the MCP server, default is 0.0.0.0.
• SEARX_MCP_PORT: Specify the port of the MCP server, default is 8080.
• SEARX_SEARCH_PORT: Specify the port of the Searx search engine, default is 8081.

Query Example

Send a simple search request:

Add the Searx server configuration to the MCP client:
