🚀 GeekNews MCP Server

This project is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that fetches articles from GeekNews. It is implemented in Python and uses BeautifulSoup for web crawling. To reduce server load, it provides a feature that automatically parses data and stores it in the cache daily.

Tools

• get_articles Tool: A function to fetch articles from GeekNews.

  • Allows specifying the article type (top, new, ask, show) and the number of articles to return.
  • Each response includes information such as title, URL, points, author, time, number of comments, and ranking.
  • Uses cached data to reduce server load.

• get_weekly_news Tool: A function to fetch weekly news from GeekNews.

  • Allows specifying a specific weekly news ID or getting the latest weekly news.
  • Provides information such as the title, number, ID, content, URL, and project list of the weekly news.
  • Each project includes information such as title, URL, and ranking.
  • Uses cached data to reduce server load.

Caching Functionality

• Automatically parses data and stores it in the cache daily.
• Uses cached data directly within the validity period without accessing the GeekNews server.
• The cache data is valid for 24 hours and will be automatically updated after that.
• A timer periodically checks the cache validity and updates it when necessary.

📦 Installation

1. Clone the Repository

git clone https://github.com/the0807/GeekNews-MCP-Server
cd GeekNews-MCP-Server

2. Set Up the Environment with uv

uv sync

3. Install Dependencies

pip install -r requirements.txt

4. Start the Server

python main.py

⚠️ Important Note

• This project relies on the structure of the GeekNews website. If the website structure changes, the crawling logic may need to be adjusted.
• The cached data is stored in the .cache/geeknews-mcp folder under the user's home directory.
