🚀 Project Memory MCP

A Memory Control Protocol (MCP) server for storing and retrieving project information from memory files. This enables AI agents (such as Claude) to maintain persistent memory of projects across different conversations.

🚀 Quick Start

Project Memory MCP offers a straightforward approach to manage project information:

• Store project information in Markdown format.
• Retrieve project information at the start of a conversation.
• Update project information using patches.

The memory is stored in the MEMORY.md file within each project directory.

📦 Installation

Using uvx

This method uses uvx (from the uv Python package manager) to run the server without permanent installation:

Prerequisites

If you haven't installed uvx yet, install it from uv.

Setting up the MCP client (Claude Desktop, Cursor, etc.)

Merge the following configuration with your existing configuration file (e.g., claude_desktop_config.json):

⚠️ Important Note

Replace /Users/your-username with the actual paths to your project and code directories.

Installing from source

Prerequisites

• Python 3.11 or higher
• Pip package manager

Clone the repository

git clone https://github.com/your-username/project-mem-mcp.git
python -m venv venv
source venv/bin/activate
pip install -e .

Setting up the MCP client (Claude Desktop, Cursor, etc.)

Merge the following configuration with your existing configuration file (e.g., claude_desktop_config.json):

⚠️ Important Note

Replace path/to/your/venv/bin/project-mem-mcp with the actual path to your executable file.

🔧 Technical Details

Parameters

• --allowed-dir: Specify directories that are allowed to be accessed. This parameter can be used multiple times to specify multiple directories.

Basic Usage

# Retrieve project information
get_project_memory --project-path <project_path>

# Set project information
set_project_memory --project-path <project_path> --memory-content <memory_content>

# Update project information
update_project_memory --project-path <project_path> --new-content <new_content>

Example Workflow

1. Start a conversation with the LLM about the project.
2. The LLM uses get_project_memory to retrieve project information.
3. Throughout the conversation, the LLM uses update_project_memory to persist new information.
4. If the update fails, the LLM can use set_project_memory instead.

Claude Desktop

If you are using Claude Desktop, it is recommended to use the project feature.

Edit the project description:

• Add a line like "The project path is <project_path>".
• If you don't want to always use memory, add a line like "Memory is not optional".

Security Considerations

• Sensitive information should not be included in memory files.
• Project paths are verified against allowed directories.
• All file operations are restricted to allowed directories.
