🪙 Cryptocurrency MCP Server

A server using FastMCP that provides real-time cryptocurrency data from API Ninjas Crypto API.

This server exposes tools through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), allowing compatible clients (such as Claude, Cursor, etc.) to easily query cryptocurrency symbols and their current prices.

🚀 Quick Start

Follow these steps to set up and run the server locally.

Prerequisites

• Python 3.10 or higher
• git
• Virtual environment tool (such as venv or uv)
• API key from API Ninjas (specifically for the Crypto API)

Installation and Setup

1. Clone the repository:

   git clone https://github.com/<your-username>/crypto-mcp-server.git # Replace with the actual repository URL
   cd crypto-mcp-server
   

2. Create and activate a virtual environment:

   • Using venv (standard library):

   python3 -m venv venv
   source venv/bin/activate # Use `venv\Scripts\activate` on Windows
   

   • Using uv (if installed):

   uv venv venv
   source venv/bin/activate
   

3. Install dependencies:

   • Using pip (with venv):

   pip install -e ".[dev]" # Install the development environment
   pip install -r requirements.txt # Install other dependencies
   

   • Using uv:

   uv add crypto-mcp-server
   

4. Run the server:

   python -m fastmcp --config config.yaml
   

Configuration File

Create a configuration file config.yaml, for example:

Cryptocurrency Price Query

Use the following command to query the price of a cryptocurrency:

Environment Variable Support

You can also configure the API key through environment variables:

API_KEY=your_api_key_here python -m fastmcp crypto_price --symbol BTC,ETH,XRP

The project's data comes from API Ninjas Crypto API, which provides real-time and historical cryptocurrency data.
