Watsonx Rag MCP Server

This project builds a Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) server based on IBM Watsonx.ai, uses ChromaDB for vector indexing, and exposes interfaces through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). The system can process PDF documents and answer questions based on the document content, realizing an intelligent question answering function that combines large language models with specific domain knowledge.

What is Watsonx.ai RAG Chatbot?

This server allows you to ask questions about your PDF documents (like manuals or reports) and get accurate answers. It combines IBM's powerful AI with your specific documents to provide knowledgeable responses.

How to use this service?

Simply add your PDFs to the documents folder, run the server, and ask questions through the web interface or Claude Desktop. The system will find relevant information from your documents and generate answers.

Ideal Use Cases

Perfect for technical support (product manuals), research (paper analysis), compliance (policy documents), and any scenario where you need quick answers from lengthy documents.

Key Features

Document Understanding
Extracts and understands content from your PDF documents automatically.
Smart Question Answering
Provides accurate answers based specifically on your documents, not general knowledge.
Claude Desktop Integration
Works seamlessly within Claude Desktop through MCP protocol.
Persistent Knowledge Base
Remembers your documents between sessions for quick access.
Strengths
Provides document-specific answers rather than generic information
Easy to set up with minimal technical knowledge required
Works with existing PDFs without modification
Can handle technical and specialized content effectively
Limitations
Requires initial document processing time
Answers are only as good as the source documents
May struggle with very complex queries spanning multiple documents
PDF formatting can sometimes affect text extraction quality

Getting Started

Prepare your documents
Place all PDF files you want to query in the 'documents' folder.
Configure credentials
Create a .env file with your Watsonx.ai API key and project details.
Run the server
Start the server which will process your documents (first time may take longer).
Ask questions
Use either the web interface (port 5001) or integrate with Claude Desktop.

Example Use Cases

Technical Product Support
Answer customer questions about product features and specifications using the product manual.
Research Paper Analysis
Quickly find key information across multiple academic papers.
Policy Compliance
Verify company policies by querying policy documents.
