🚀 Spotify-MCP Server Project

This project aims to connect Claude with Spotify. It is built on the spotipy-dev's API.

📦 Installation

Obtain Spotify API Keys

Create an account at developer.spotify.com. Navigate to the Dashboard. Create an app and set the redirect_uri to http://localhost:8888. (You can choose any port, but you must use http and localhost.) I selected "Web Playback SDK" for "APIs used".

Run the Project Locally

This project is not yet configured to run without an environment (e.g., the use of uvx). Clone this repository to run the project locally.

Troubleshooting

If you cannot use this MCP, please open an issue. Here are some tips:

1. Make sure uv is up to date. The recommended version is >=0.54.
2. Make sure Claude has execution permissions: chmod -R 755.
3. Make sure you have Spotify Premium (required to run the developer API).

This MCP will output to the standard error stream (as specified in the MCP specification). On Mac, the Claude Desktop application will display logs at this path: ~/Library/Logs/Claude. On other platforms, you can find the logs here.

📋 To-Do List

Unfortunately, due to the deactivation of some features in the Spotify API, many cool features cannot be implemented now. I will mainly focus on the healthy development of the project:

• Add tests.
• Add API support for playlist management.
• Add API support for pagination of search results, playlists/albums, etc.

Packaging and Publishing

Prepare a release version:

1. Synchronize dependencies and update the lock file:

uv sync

2. Build the release version:

uv build

This will create source code and wheel format distributions in the dist/ directory.

3. Publish to PyPI:

uv publish

Note: You need to set your PyPI credentials through environment variables or command-line parameters:

• Token: --token or UV_PUBLISH_TOKEN
• Or username/password: --username/UV_PUBLISH_USERNAME and --password/UV_PUBLISH_PASSWORD

Debugging

Since the MCP server runs through standard I/O, debugging can be challenging. For the best debugging experience, we strongly recommend using MCP Inspector.

You can start the MCP Inspector with the following command:

npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector uv --directory /Users/varun/Documents/Python/spotify_mcp run spotify-mcp

After starting, the Inspector will display a URL that you can access in your browser to start debugging.
