What is VSCode Internal Command MCP Server?
This is a VSCode extension that transforms your code editor into an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server. It allows external applications (such as AI assistants and other development tools) to execute internal VSCode commands via an HTTP connection, such as code formatting, file saving, copy-pasting, and other operations. How to use this service?
After installing the extension, the server will start automatically. You can control which operations external clients can perform by configuring the allowed command list. Clients connect to port localhost:8080 via HTTP, send command requests, and the server executes the corresponding operations and returns the results.Applicable scenarios
Suitable for developers when they need to automate VSCode operations, such as integrating with AI programming assistants, building custom development workflows, remotely controlling VSCode to perform specific tasks, and other scenarios.Main features
HTTP streaming support
Uses the text/event-stream protocol to achieve real-time communication, ensuring timely responses to command execution
VSCode command execution
Supports the execution of any internal VSCode commands, from simple editing operations to complex workspace management
Workspace information query
Get the current workspace status, folder structure, and active editor information
Asynchronous background execution
Commands can be executed asynchronously in the background without blocking user interface operations
Configurable execution delay
You can set a delay for command execution to adapt to different usage scenarios
Security control mechanism
Ensures that only authorized commands can be executed through the command whitelist mechanism
Real-time status monitoring
The status bar displays the server running status, making it easy for users to monitor the connection status
Health check endpoint
Built-in health check function to ensure the normal operation of the server
Advantages
๐ Seamless integration: Runs directly in VSCode without additional installation
๐ง Flexible configuration: Supports command whitelisting and execution parameter configuration
โก High performance: Based on the FastMCP framework, supports concurrent request processing
๐ก๏ธ Security: Only listens on localhost by default, avoiding external access risks
๐ Real-time feedback: Provides detailed execution status and error information
๐ Standard compatibility: Fully complies with the MCP protocol specification and is compatible with various clients
Limitations
๐ Limited to the VSCode environment: Can only be used in the VSCode editor
๐ Network dependency: Requires an HTTP connection and may be limited by the network environment
โ๏ธ Configuration complexity: Requires correct configuration of the command whitelist to ensure security
๐ Asynchronous execution delay: There may be a slight delay in background task execution
๐ Command compatibility: Some VSCode extension commands may require specific contexts
How to use
Install the extension
Install the VSCode Internal Command MCP Server extension in VSCode
Configure the server
Configure the server parameters and allowed command list in the VSCode settings
Start the server
The server usually starts automatically, or you can start it manually through the command palette
Connect the client
Configure your client application to connect to the MCP server endpoint
Execute commands
Send command requests through the client, and the server executes and returns the results
Usage examples
AI assistant automatic code formatting
After the AI programming assistant detects code formatting issues, it automatically triggers the VSCode formatting command
Remote file saving
Trigger VSCode to save the currently edited file from an external tool
Workspace information retrieval
Get the structure and file information of the current workspace for project analysis
Batch command execution
Execute multiple VSCode commands in sequence to implement complex workflows
