What is Skillz?

Skillz is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server dedicated to managing and executing Claude-style skills. It can scan the skill directory, convert each skill into a tool callable by MCP clients, enabling various AI assistants (such as Codex, Copilot, Cursor, etc.) to use these skills.

How to use Skillz?

Using Skillz is very simple: First, configure your AI assistant to connect to the Skillz MCP server, then place the skill files in the specified directory. Skillz will automatically discover these skills and provide them as tools for the AI assistant to use.

Applicable scenarios

Skillz is very suitable for scenarios where the functions of AI assistants need to be extended, such as document processing, data analysis, code generation, text translation, etc. Developers can create custom skills, and users can directly install and use them without modifying the code of the AI assistant itself.

Main features

Automatic skill discovery
Automatically scan the skill directory, discover and load all available skills, supporting folder, ZIP file, and.skill file formats.
Multi-format support
Supports multiple skill packaging formats, including folders, ZIP archives, and the.skill dedicated format, providing flexible deployment methods.
Resource management
Automatically manage resource files (scripts, datasets, examples, etc.) related to skills, allowing AI assistants to access and use these resources.
Script execution
Can run the help scripts bundled in the skills, providing dynamic execution capabilities for the skills.
Multi-transport protocol
Supports multiple transport protocols such as stdio, HTTP, and SSE, adapting to different deployment environments.
Docker container support
Provides a Docker image, supporting running in a container environment to improve security and isolation.
Advantages
Cross-platform compatibility - Supports multiple AI assistants and development environments
Flexible deployment - Supports local installation and Docker containerized deployment
Easy to expand - Simple skill format, facilitating the creation and sharing of new skills
Rich resources - Can obtain a large number of ready-made skills from the Skills Supermarket
Security isolation - Supports running in a sandbox environment to improve security
Limitations
Experimental project - Currently still in the proof-of-concept stage, and there may be stability issues
Security risks - Need to be cautious with third-party skills, and it is recommended to run them in a sandbox
Skill compatibility - Some skills may need to run in a specific environment
Dependency management - Skills may depend on specific system environments or software packages

How to use

Install Skillz
Install the Skillz package using pip: pip install skillz, or run the latest version directly using uvx.
Configure the AI assistant
Add the Skillz MCP server configuration to your AI assistant configuration file.
Prepare the skill directory
Create a skill directory (default is ~/.skillz) and place the skill files in it.
Verify skill discovery
Use the skillz --list-skills command to verify if the skills are correctly discovered.
Start using
Start your AI assistant, and now you can use all the discovered skills.

Usage examples

Document summarization skill
Use the summarize-docs skill to automatically summarize long documents. This skill includes a summarization script and example prompt words.
Text translation skill
Use the translate skill to translate text from one language to another. The skill package includes a translation script and a language model.
Web search skill
Use the web-search skill to search for relevant information on the Internet. The skill includes search API integration and result processing logic.
