🚀 Genio MCP Server

Genio MCP Server is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server designed for the Genio IDE on Haiku. It enables Claude Code to directly access Genio's editor via the BMessage scripting API.

Editor State & Navigation

• get_editor_state: Retrieve information about the current file, cursor position, selection, modified state, visible lines, and scroll position.
• navigate_to: Open a file at a specific line and column.

Editor Content

• read_editor_buffer: Read the content of the current editor.
• write_editor_buffer: Replace the entire buffer.

Text Editing

• insert_at_cursor: Insert or replace the selected text.
• append_to_file: Append text to the end of the file.
• undo / redo: Perform undo and redo operations.

🚀 Quick Start

Prerequisites

# On Haiku
pkgman install nim          # Nim >= 2.0.0

Build & Install

# Build server (auto-installs dependencies)
nimble build

# Run tests (requires Genio running)
nimble test

# Add to Claude Code
claude mcp add --transport stdio genio -- $PWD/genio_mcp_server

Alternatively, you can configure it manually in ~/.config/claude-code/config.json:

Configuration

Build settings are located in the following files:

• genio_mcp_server.nimble: Package metadata, dependencies, and backend selection.
• nim.cfg: Compiler flags (C++ backend required, links -lbe).

🔧 Technical Details

Architecture

The server consists of two layers:

1. MCP Layer (src/genio_mcp_server.nim): Implements JSON-RPC over stdio using nimcp.
2. Genio Interface (src/genio_interface.nim): Self-contained Haiku API FFI bindings.

Communication with Genio is based on Haiku's BMessage protocol:

Adding Tools

To add tools, modify the src/genio_mcp_server.nim file:

There are 18 tests covering connection, navigation, editor state, text operations, and undo/redo.

📚 Documentation

Troubleshooting

Server won't connect

• Make sure Genio is running.
• Run ./genio_mcp_server; you should see the message "Connected to Genio IDE".

Build errors

• nimcp not found: Run nimble install nimcp.
• BApplication undefined: Install Haiku dev headers using pkgman install haiku_devel.
