What is the reMarkable MCP Server?

This is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server specifically designed to connect to your reMarkable tablet. It allows AI assistants to directly access all documents, notes, and files on your tablet, just like accessing an external knowledge base. Whether it's handwritten notes, PDF documents, or EPUB e - books, AI can read their contents.

How to use the reMarkable MCP Server?

You can connect in two ways: SSH mode (direct connection via USB, faster) or cloud mode (via the reMarkable Connect service). After installation, AI assistants can use specialized tools to browse folders, search for documents, read contents, and even convert handwritten text into searchable text.

Use cases

Suitable for researchers, writers, students, and anyone who uses the reMarkable for in - depth thinking and work. This tool is particularly useful when you need an AI assistant to help organize notes, find information, summarize contents, or transform handwritten ideas into structured documents.

Main features

Full library access
Browse all folders, search for documents, and read the contents of any file, including PDFs, EPUBs, and notebooks
Handwriting OCR recognition
Convert handwritten notes into searchable text, supporting multiple OCR backends (Google Vision, Tesseract, AI sampling)
Typed text extraction
Natively support the Type Folio keyboard and typed annotations, and directly extract the typed text content
Smart search
Search for content in the entire library, supporting batch searches across multiple documents, including handwritten and printed text
Image extraction
Get PNG or SVG images of notebook pages for viewing charts, sketches, or UI designs
Auto - redirect
Automatically return the content when browsing the document path, simplifying the operation process
Recent documents
Quickly get a list of recently modified documents for daily review and organization
Advantages
Transform the reMarkable into a real second brain, allowing AI to access all your knowledge
Support handwriting recognition, breaking the digital barrier of handwritten notes
Fast speed in SSH mode (10 - 100 times faster) and no subscription service required
Multiple OCR options, including free AI sampling OCR
Seamless integration with mainstream AI tools (Claude, VS Code Copilot, etc.)
Read - only access to ensure the security of your data
Limitations
Requires certain technical settings (especially in SSH mode)
The cloud mode requires a reMarkable Connect subscription
The accuracy of handwriting OCR depends on the selected backend
Currently only supports reading, not writing or editing documents
Some advanced features require an API key (e.g., Google Vision)

How to use

Select the connection mode
Choose between SSH mode (recommended, faster) or cloud mode (no developer mode required) according to your needs
SSH mode setup
If you choose SSH mode, you need to enable developer mode on the reMarkable and connect it to your computer via USB. See the SSH setup guide for detailed steps.
Install the MCP server
Add the MCP server configuration in VS Code or Claude Desktop. You can use the provided installation link or configure it manually.
Configure OCR (optional)
If you need handwriting recognition, configure the OCR backend. You can choose the Google Vision API, Tesseract, or use AI sampling OCR.
Start using
Restart the AI client, and now you can access the content on the reMarkable through the AI assistant.

Usage examples

Research note organization
You've taken a large number of handwritten notes on the reMarkable during your research, and now you need AI to help organize and summarize them
Meeting record search
You need to find specific items discussed in a meeting several months ago, but you only remember some keywords
Creative writing material organization
A writer has recorded scattered creative ideas and story concepts on the reMarkable and needs to organize them into a coherent material library
Study note review
A student needs to review course notes, but the notes are scattered in multiple documents, and some are handwritten
Chart and sketch extraction
A designer has drawn UI sketches and flowcharts on the reMarkable and needs to extract the images for further design
