What is Secret MCP?
Secret MCP is a tool specifically designed for developers. It solves a core security problem when using AI programming assistants: how to let AI help you set project environment variables (.env files) without leaking your sensitive information (such as API keys, database passwords, etc.). It includes a desktop application for managing your secrets and an MCP server that allows AI assistants to operate on this data securely. How to use Secret MCP?
First, add and manage all your secret information through the desktop application. Then, configure the MCP client in your AI programming assistant (such as Claude, Cursor, etc.) to connect to the Secret MCP server. When the AI assistant needs to create or update the.env file for your project, it will operate through the secure MCP tool, ensuring that your secret values are never sent to the AI or leave your computer.Use cases
1. Automatically generate.env files when initializing projects using AI assistants. 2. Securely share environment configurations in team collaboration. 3. Manage API keys and sensitive configurations for multiple projects. 4. Prevent accidental leakage of sensitive information during AI programming.Main Features
Secure Secret Management
Securely store and manage all secret information through a local desktop application, supporting full management of names, descriptions, and values.
AI Secure Integration
The MCP server provides two secure tools: search_secrets (only searches names and descriptions) and write_env (writes directly to the file), ensuring that the AI never sees the secret values.
Local Storage Guarantee
All data is stored in a local SQLite database, and the secure storage location is automatically selected according to the operating system. The data never leaves your device.
One-click Installation and Use
Just run npx secret-mcp. No complex build process is required, and it supports cross-platform (macOS, Linux, Windows).
File Permission Security
The generated.env file is automatically set to 600 permissions (only the owner can read and write), preventing other users or processes from accessing it.
Advantages
Fully protect sensitive information: Secret values are never sent to AI services.
Simplify the workflow: AI can automatically handle.env file creation without manual operation.
Local storage security: All data is stored on the user's device and not uploaded to the cloud.
Easy to integrate: Seamlessly collaborate with AI assistants that support the MCP protocol.
Cross-platform support: Supports mainstream operating systems.
Limitations
Requires AI assistants to support the MCP protocol.
Only applicable to development scenarios that require.env file management.
Requires users to manually manage secrets in the desktop application.
Does not support cloud synchronization (by design for security reasons).
How to Use
Install the Desktop Application
Download the installation package for the corresponding platform from GitHub Releases or build it from the source code.
Add Your Secrets
Open the Secret MCP desktop application, add your sensitive information such as API keys and database connection strings, and set a name and description for each secret.
Configure the MCP Client
Add the Secret MCP server to the MCP configuration of your AI programming assistant (such as Claude Desktop).
Start Using the AI Assistant
Now when the AI assistant needs to create or update the.env file, it will automatically use the secure MCP tool without seeing your actual secret values.
Usage Examples
New Project Environment Setup
When you start a new project and need to set various API keys and environment variables, you can let the AI assistant automatically create a complete.env file.
Team Project Configuration Synchronization
When new members join a team project, they need to quickly set up the development environment.
Multi-environment Configuration Management
Manage configurations for different environments such as development, testing, and production.
