What is ChartPane?
ChartPane is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server application that allows AI assistants (such as Claude and ChatGPT) to directly generate and display beautiful interactive charts for you during conversations. You only need to describe the data visualization you want in natural language, and the AI will call ChartPane to render the corresponding chart and display it directly in the chat interface. How to use ChartPane?
Using ChartPane is very simple: First, configure the ChartPane server address in your AI client (such as Claude Desktop). Then, directly describe the data you want to visualize to the AI in the conversation, for example, 'Create a bar chart showing quarterly revenue'. The AI will automatically process your request and call ChartPane to render the chart.Use cases
ChartPane is very suitable for scenarios that require rapid data visualization, such as: - Generate charts instantly in analysis discussions to assist understanding - Convert text data reports into visual charts - Create monitoring dashboards containing multiple charts - Visualize project data in the code editorMain features
Rich chart types
Supports 9 mainstream chart types: Bar, Line, Area, Pie, Doughnut, PolarArea, Bubble, Scatter, Radar.
Multi-chart dashboard
Multiple charts can be combined in a grid layout to create a feature-rich dashboard view, supporting a maximum of 4-column layout.
Flexible style configuration
Supports custom color configuration and also provides an automatic 12-color color scheme. Variants such as stacked bar charts and horizontal bar charts can be created.
Wide client compatibility
Compatible with all clients that support the MCP protocol, including Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, VS Code, Cursor, etc.
Client-side rendering and privacy protection
All charts are rendered locally in your browser, and the original data values are never sent to the server for storage, ensuring data privacy.
Advantages
Seamless integration: Render charts directly in the AI conversation interface without switching applications
Easy to use: Generate charts by describing in natural language without learning complex tools
Privacy and security: Data is processed in the local browser and not stored on the server
Highly interactive: The generated charts support interactive operations (such as hovering to view values)
Fast response: Based on the mature Chart.js library, the rendering speed is fast
Limitations
Dependent on the MCP protocol: Requires the AI client to support the MCP protocol to use
Relatively basic functions: Focuses on core chart types and lacks advanced analysis functions of professional BI tools
Configuration requires technical knowledge: Initial server configuration requires certain technical operations
Not available offline: Requires an internet connection to load the ChartPane service
How to use
Configure the MCP server
Add ChartPane as an MCP server in your AI client. Take Claude Desktop as an example: Open Settings > Connectors > Add a custom connector.
Configure using mcp-remote (optional)
If you use a Node.js environment, you can configure it through the mcp-remote package. Add the following content to the MCP server configuration file of the client:
Start using
After the configuration is completed, directly describe the data you want to visualize in the AI conversation. The AI will automatically call ChartPane to render the corresponding chart.
Usage examples
Quarterly revenue bar chart
Convert the quarterly revenue data in text form into an intuitive bar chart for easy comparison of the performance of each quarter.
Browser market share pie chart
Convert the market share percentage data into a pie chart to intuitively show the proportion of each browser.
Business growth dashboard
Create a dashboard containing multiple related charts to comprehensively display different dimensional indicators of the business.
