What is a PostgREST MCP Server?
The PostgREST MCP server is a bridge that connects AI assistants (such as Claude) to the PostgREST database API. It allows AI assistants to securely query and manipulate the database without direct access to database credentials. The server uses OAuth2 for secure authentication, ensuring that only authorized AI assistants can access your data. How to Use the PostgREST MCP Server?
Using the PostgREST MCP server requires three main steps: 1) Deploy the server to a cloud platform (Supabase, Cloudflare, or Deno), 2) Configure environment variables to connect to your PostgREST database, 3) Configure the MCP connection in an AI assistant (such as Claude Desktop). After configuration, the AI assistant can query your database through natural language.Use Cases
The PostgREST MCP server is particularly suitable for the following scenarios: Data analysts need to quickly query the database without writing SQL; Product managers want to understand user data trends; Developers need AI assistants to help debug data issues; Teams want to securely allow AI to access the database for intelligent analysis.Main Features
OAuth2 Secure Authentication
Use the industry-standard OAuth2 protocol for authentication to ensure the security of AI assistants accessing the database. It supports Supabase and other OAuth2-compatible authentication servers.
Multi-Platform Deployment
Supports deployment to Supabase Edge Functions, Cloudflare Workers, and Deno Deploy. Choose the most suitable cloud platform according to your needs.
Supabase Automatic Configuration
When deploying to Supabase, automatically detect the PostgREST API endpoint and authentication configuration to simplify the setup process.
Streaming HTTP Response
Supports streaming HTTP responses to improve the performance and user experience of large data volume queries.
PostgREST Compatibility
Can work with any PostgREST server, including NEON, Supabase, and custom-deployed PostgREST instances.
Advantages
Out-of-the-box Supabase integration, reducing configuration workload
Supports deployment on multiple cloud platforms, with high flexibility
Built on the Hono framework, with excellent performance
Complete OAuth2 security implementation to protect database access
Fully compatible with Claude Desktop and Claude Web
Limitations
The MCP Inspector tool is currently not fully compatible (status as of January 2026)
Requires basic knowledge of cloud deployment
Non-Supabase deployments require manual configuration of environment variables
Depends on the availability of external PostgREST servers
How to Use
Select a Deployment Platform
Select a deployment platform according to your needs: Supabase Edge Functions (recommended, automatic configuration), Cloudflare Workers, or Deno Deploy.
Configure Environment Variables
Set the necessary environment variables: AUTH_SERVER_URL (OAuth server address), API_BASE_URL (PostgREST address), API_KEY or SUPABASE_ANON_KEY (API key).
Deploy the Server
Use the corresponding deployment command to deploy the server to the selected platform.
Configure the AI Assistant
Configure the MCP connection in Claude Desktop or Claude Web, using the deployed server URL.
