Basic Usage

Create and Run a Function App

1. Initialize the Project Open a command - line tool and execute the following command to create a new Azure Functions project:

   npm init -y
   

   Follow the prompts to enter project information. After completion, a package.json file will be generated.

2. Install Dependencies Install the required dependencies. In this example, we need to install .net and azure - functions - core - tools:

   npm install .net azure-functions-core-tools --save
   

3. Create a Function File Create a new JavaScript or TypeScript file (e.g., hello.js) in the project directory and add the following code:

   module.exports = async function (context, req) {
       context.log('Hello World!');
       res.status(200).json({ message: 'Hello World!' });
   };
   

4. Configure the Function App Create a function.json file in the project root directory with the following content:

   {

               "direction": "inout",
               "authLevel": "anonymous"

       ]
   }
   

5. Run the Function App Use the following command to run the function app locally:

   func start
   

   Open a browser and visit http://localhost:7071/api/hello to test your function.

🚀 Deployment to Azure

Prerequisites

• Azure CLI Installed and Configured: Ensure that you have installed the Azure CLI and logged in to your Azure account.
• Resource Group and App Service Plan Ready: Create a resource group and an app service plan in the Azure portal.

Deployment Steps

1. Install Azure Functions Core Tools If not already installed, you can install it using the following command:

   npm install -g azure-functions-core-tools@latest
   

2. Log in to Your Azure Account Open a command - line tool and execute the following command to log in to your Azure account:

   az login
   

3. Set the Default Subscription If you have multiple subscriptions, you can specify a default subscription:

   az account set --subscription <subscription - name>
   

4. Deploy the Function App Use the following command to deploy the function app to Azure:

   func azure deploy --name <function - app - name> --resource - group <resource - group - name> --plan <app - service - plan - name>
   

   Replace <function - app - name>, <resource - group - name>, and <app - service - plan - name> with your actual values.

5. Access the Deployed Function After deployment, you can find your function app in the Azure portal and access its URL to test the functionality.

🔧 Error Handling

Common Issues

• 401 Unauthorized Error: Ensure that your function app permissions are set correctly and there are no network restrictions.
• Unable to Connect to the Database: Check if the database connection string is correct and the database service is available.
• Timeout Issues: Increase the function's execution timeout or optimize the code to reduce the runtime.

Solutions

• Check Logs: View the function app's logs in the Azure portal to get detailed error information.
• Adjust Configuration: Adjust the settings in host.json and function.json as needed.
• Redeploy: If the problem cannot be resolved, try deleting and redeploying the function app.

🗑️ Clean Up Resources

After completing the project, if you no longer need the relevant Azure resources, you can clean them up using the following command:

az group delete --name <resource - group - name>

This will delete the resource group and all resources it contains, including the function app, database, etc., to avoid unnecessary costs.

⚠️ Important Note

• Resource Cleanup: In a production environment, ensure that you have backed up important data before cleaning up resources.
• Cost Control: Set up automatic shutdown or scaling policies for resources as needed to optimize costs.
• Monitoring and Alerts: Use Azure Monitor to set up alerts to detect and handle potential issues in a timely manner.
