🚀 VSCode MCP

This mono-repository stores the VSCode MCP server and its accompanying VSCode extension. Together, they enable AI agents and assistants (such as Goose or Claude) to interact with VSCode via the Model Context Protocol.

Configuration

Goose Desktop Settings

• ID: code-mcp
• Name: VS Code
• Description: Allow interaction with VS Code via the Model Context Protocol
• Command: npx vscode-mcp-server

Claude Desktop Settings

Add the following content to your Claude Desktop configuration file (~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json):

Available Tools

The Code MCP server provides the following tools for AI agents to interact with VS Code:

create_diff

Create and display a diff of file modifications:

• Show a diff preview before modification
• Require user confirmation
• Only applicable to existing files

open_file

Open a file in the VS Code editor:

• Used to view new or modified files

open_project

Open a project folder in VS Code:

• Set the working directory for the AI agent

check_extension_status

Check if the extension is installed and responding properly

get_extension_port

Get the port number of the VS Code MCP extension

list_available_projects

Display projects from the port registration file
