The Claude MCP server provides services for the Macrostrat API.

This is an MCP server implementation that provides access to the Macrostrat API in Claude Desktop.

This Model Context Protocol (MCP) server enables AI assistants and applications to:

• Query comprehensive geological data and information provided by the Macrostrat API.
• Access information on stratigraphic units, rock columns, minerals, time scales, etc.
• Analyze geological data to enhance geological understanding.
• Create graphs and perform data analysis using the data.

Users can run queries using natural language.

1. Mesoproterozoic Basement (1.6 to 1.1 billion years ago)
   • The basement rocks are mainly metamorphic and igneous rocks.
2. Cenozoic (Recent)
   • The Tennessee River Valley region began to form in the Cenozoic.

📦 Installation

Install Using Smithery

npx -y @smithery/cli install @blake365/macrostrat-mcp --client claude

Additional Steps

If you need to make changes to the server, you can edit the src/index.ts file.

• Run npm install to install dependencies.
• Run npm run build to build the server.
• Exit and restart Claude Desktop after making modifications.

💻 Usage Examples

Connecting with Claude Desktop

1. Open your Claude Desktop configuration file:

   • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
   • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add the server configuration:

3. Close and restart Claude Desktop.

After restarting, you should see a small hammer icon in the bottom right corner of the text box. Hovering over the icon will show the number of available MCP tools.

Troubleshooting

⚠️ Important Note

If you encounter errors when running the server, you may need to provide the full path to the node command. For example, on macOS: /usr/local/bin/node
