This is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for the FamilySearch API. It enables AI tools like Claude or Cursor to directly interact with FamilySearch's family history data.

Prerequisites

• Node.js 16+ and npm.
• A FamilySearch developer account and API credentials.
• A FamilySearch user account with access to family tree data.

Steps

1. Clone this repository.
2. Install dependencies:

npm install

3. Build the project:

npm run build

FamilySearch API Setup

Before using this tool, you need to register for FamilySearch API access:

1. Visit FamilySearch Developers.
2. Log in with your FamilySearch account.
3. Create a new application.
4. Set the redirect URI to https://localhost:8080/oauth-redirect (can be modified later).
5. Copy your client ID; you'll need it for configuration.

Usage

Run the server:

npm start

Then, in an MCP-compatible AI tool (such as Claude or Cursor), you can use the FamilySearch tool to directly interact with family history data.

Configuration

When using MCP for the first time, you need to configure your FamilySearch API credentials:

Configure FamilySearch API credentials using clientId: YOUR_CLIENT_ID_HERE

Then authenticate using your FamilySearch username and password:

Log in to FamilySearch using username: your_username and password: your_password

After successful login, your credentials will be securely stored in ~/.familysearch-mcp/config.json for future use.

Available MCP Tools

Basic Functions

• say-hello: A simple greeting function.
• configure: Set FamilySearch API credentials.
• authenticate: Log in to FamilySearch.
• get-current-user: View your FamilySearch account details.

Family Tree Tools

• search-persons: Search for individuals in the FamilySearch family tree.
• get-person: View detailed information about a specific person.
• get-ancestors: Explore a person's ancestors (up to 8 generations).
• get-descendants: Explore a person's descendants (up to 3 generations).

Historical Record Tools

• search-records: Search FamilySearch's historical record collections.

Example Queries

Search for persons with the name "John Smith" and born in "New York"

Get information about the person with ID ABCD-123

Get the ancestors of the person with ID ABCD-123 up to 4 generations

Search for records of people with the last name "Johnson", born in "England", and died on "1880-01-01"

Security Note

⚠️ Important Note

Your FamilySearch credentials are stored in the ~/.familysearch-mcp/config.json file on your local machine. Do not share this file with others.
