An MCP server paired with a browser extension that enables large language model clients (such as Claude Desktop) to control the user's local browser (Firefox).

This MCP server is designed to work in tandem with a browser extension, allowing large language model clients like Claude Desktop to interact with and control the user's local Firefox browser.

✨ Features

The MCP server supports the following tools:

• Open or close tabs.
• Get a list of open tabs.
• Rearrange open tabs.
• View and search browser history.
• Read the main content and links of web pages.
• Find and highlight text in browser tabs.

In addition, the content of each open tab in the browser can be used as an MCP resource. Users can select browser tabs in the MCP client (such as Claude) and load their content.

Tab Management

• "Close all non-work-related tabs."
• "Rearrange my tabs in a meaningful way."
• "Close tabs that haven't been accessed in 24 hours."

Browser History Search

• "Help me find an article about the Milford Track in New Zealand."
• "Open all articles about AI I've browsed in the past week, showing a maximum of 10 and avoiding duplicates."

Browsing and Research

• "Open Hackernews in the browser, then open the top news and read the article and its comments. Do the comments generally agree with the article?"
• "Search for papers on L-theanine in the past three years using Google Scholar in the browser. Open the three most cited papers. Summarize them after reading."
• "Use the Google search engine to find flower shops. Open the 10 most relevant results. Display a table of each flower shop, its location, and opening hours."

📦 Installation

Clone this repository and run the following commands in the main directory to build the MCP server and browser extension:

npm install
npm install --prefix mcp-server
npm install --prefix firefox-extension
npm run build

The final npm run build command also generates a shared secret between the MCP server and the extension.

Using with Claude Desktop:

Add the following configuration to the claude_desktop_config.json file (using the "Edit Config" button in Claude Desktop's developer settings):

Replace <path> with the correct path.

Remember to restart Claude Desktop.

Using with Firefox

The browser control MCP extension is developed for Firefox.

To install the extension:

1. Enter about:debugging in the Firefox address bar.
2. Click "This Firefox".
3. Click "Load Temporary Add-on...".
4. Select the manifest.json file in the firefox-extension directory of the project folder.

If you don't want to run the extension on your personal Firefox browser, you can choose to download a separate Firefox instance (e.g., Firefox Developer Edition, available at: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/developer/).
