💡 Usage Tip

Here, "resources" refers to the MCP definition, not FHIR. MCP resources are the core primitives in the Model Context Protocol (MCP), allowing servers to expose data and content for clients to read and use as context for LLM interactions.

• List and access FHIR resources via URIs
• Return resources in FHIR JSON format
• Support all FHIR resource types available in the FHIR server's CapabilityStatement

• search_fhir - Search for FHIR resources
  • Accept resourceType and searchParams as parameters
  • Return FHIR search results
• read_fhir - Read a single FHIR resource
  • Accept uri as a parameter
  • Return a FHIR resource in JSON format

📦 Installation

Configuration

The server requires the following environment variables:

• FHIR_BASE_URL: The base URL of your FHIR server
• FHIR_ACCESS_TOKEN: The SMART on FHIR access token for authentication

Steps

To use it with Claude Desktop, add the server configuration:

Debugging

Since MCP servers communicate via stdio, debugging can be challenging. We recommend using MCP Inspector, which is available as a package script:

npm run inspector

The Inspector will provide a URL to access the debugging tools in the browser.
