The whale-tracker-mcp server is a Python-based implementation of the Model Context Protocol (MCP) integrated with the Whale Alert API. It enables real-time tracking and analysis of large cryptocurrency transactions ("whale" movements) and provides tools, resources, and prompts for MCP-compatible clients (such as Claude Desktop).

📦 Installation

Prerequisites

To run this server, you need the following:

1. Python 3.8 or higher.
2. Install the MCP Python SDK:

   pip install mcp-sdk
   

3. Whale Alert API Key: Visit Whale Alert to obtain your key.

Steps

1. Clone the repository:

   git clone https://github.com/kukapay/whale-tracker-mcp.git
   cd whale-tracker-mcp
   

2. Install dependencies:

   pip install -r requirements.txt
   

💻 Usage Examples

Basic Usage

Run in Development Mode

python src/server.py --mode development

Integrate with Claude Desktop

1. Install the server:

   mcp install whale-tracker-mcp
   

2. Start the server and specify environment variables:

   mcp install whale-tracker-mcp -v WHALE_ALERT_API_KEY=your_api_key_here
   

Direct Execution

mcp run whale_tracker_mcp -- --mode production

Advanced Usage

Get Transaction Details

To get details of a specific transaction, run the following command:

curl http://localhost:8000/api/transactions/<transaction_id>

Analyze Whale Activity

To analyze whale activity, access the resource whale://transactions/bitcoin and use the prompt query_whale_activity.

📚 Documentation

API Key Configuration

The server requires a Whale Alert API key, which is loaded via the WHALE_ALERT_API_KEY environment variable. Here's how to configure it:

1. Create a .env file:

   WHALE_ALERT_API_KEY=your_api_key_here
   

2. Ensure that python-dotenv (included in the dependencies) is installed.
3. The key will be automatically loaded when starting the server.
