Simplify the installation and restart process of Claude Desktop using the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

Tell Claude Desktop “Restart Claude”, and it will restart the application.

Resources

The server provides the following resources:

• claude://status - Returns the current status of Claude Desktop
  • JSON containing running status, PID, and timestamp
  • MIME type: application/json

Tools

The server implements a tool:

• restart_claude - Restarts the Claude Desktop application
  • Safely terminates the existing process (if running)
  • Launches a new instance
  • Provides progress notifications during the restart process

📦 Installation

Installation requires editing the Claude Desktop configuration file on MacOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

Option 1: Install both the mcp-installer and mcp-server-restart packages: Add the following to the Claude Desktop configuration file:
