A Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for the Transport for NSW (TfNSW) real-time alerts API. This server provides tools for accessing and interacting with real-time traffic alerts and information, implemented through large language models.

This TypeScript-based language server integrates with the Transport for NSW real-time alert system. It enables AI assistants to access the latest traffic disruptions, planned works, and other important traffic network alert information.

• List and access traffic alerts via nsw-transport:// URIs.
• Filter alerts by transport mode (bus, train, ferry, etc.).
• Present in plain text format for easy consumption by AI assistants.

Tools

• get-transport-alerts - Retrieve current transport alerts.
  • Filter by transport mode.
  • Return formatted alert information, including affected routes, time frames, and impact details.

Prompts

• transport-disruption-summary - Generate a summary of current traffic alerts.
  • Include relevant alert details as embedded resources.
  • Return structured prompts for LLMs to summarize major disruptions.

🚇 Transport Modes

The following transport modes are supported:

• all - All transport modes
• buses - Sydney Metro and outer metro bus services
• ferries - Sydney Ferries and Newcastle Transport ferries
• lightrail - Light rail services
• metro - Sydney Metro
• nswtrains - NSW TrainLink regional trains and coaches
• regionbuses - Regional bus services
• sydneytrains - Sydney Trains suburban and intercity network

🔑 Authentication

This server requires authentication with the TfNSW Open Data API. You need to register on the TfNSW Open Data Platform to obtain an API key.

📦 Installation

To use with Claude Desktop, add the server configuration:

On MacOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

On Windows: %APPDATA%/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

Replace "your_api_key_here" with the API key obtained from the TfNSW Open Data Platform.

🔧 Technical Details

Development

Configure your API key in the .env file:

NSW_TRANSPORT_API_KEY="your_api_key_here"

Install dependencies:

npm install

Build the server:

npm run build

Develop with automatic rebuild:

npm run watch

Debugging

You can use the MCP Inspector for debugging, which is provided as a package script:

npm run inspector

The Inspector will provide a URL to access browser debugging tools.
