🚀 Azure MCP (Model Context Protocol) for Claude Desktop

An implementation of the Model Context Protocol (MCP) that enables Claude Desktop to interact with Azure services. This integration allows Claude to directly query and manage Azure resources through natural language conversations.

📦 Installation

Prerequisites

• Node.js (v18 or higher)
• Claude Desktop application
• An Azure account with appropriate permissions
• Azure CLI (optional, for CLI - based authentication)

Manual Installation

1. Clone the repository:

git clone https://github.com/Streen9/azure-mcp.git
cd azure-mcp

2. Install dependencies:

npm install

3. Configure Claude Desktop:
   • Open claude_desktop_config.json.
   • Add the following MCP configuration:

🔐 Authentication

This server supports multiple authentication methods through DefaultAzureCredential:

• Environment variables
• Managed identities
• Azure CLI
• Visual Studio Code
• Interactive browser

The server will try these methods in sequence until one succeeds.

💻 Usage Examples

Basic Usage

1. If Claude Desktop is running, close it first (check the task manager).
2. Launch Claude Desktop.
3. In the chat, you can now ask Azure - related questions, such as:
   • "Can you get all available Azure accounts and subscriptions?"
   • "List all resource groups in my subscription."
   • "Show all virtual machines in a specific resource group."

Example Conversation

You: Can you get all available Azure accounts and subscriptions?
Claude: I can help you list all available Azure tenants and subscriptions.
[Claude will use Azure MCP to fetch and display the information]

Advanced Usage

1. Starting Claude Desktop:

   • If Claude Desktop is running, close it first (check the task manager).
   • Launch Claude Desktop.

2. Testing the Azure MCP Connection:

   • Get all available Azure accounts and subscriptions:

     /azure/list_accounts
     

   • List resource groups in a specific subscription:

     /azure/subscriptions/{subscription_id}/resource_groups
     

   • Show virtual machine information:

     /azure/vm/{subscription_id}/{resource_group}/{vm_name}
     

Advanced Example Conversation

You: /azure/list_accounts
Claude: Fetching your Azure accounts and subscription information...
Done! Here is the list of available subscriptions:
- Subscription 1: ID: sub - 12345678, Name: Production

You can use these subscription IDs to perform other operations.

🛠️ Troubleshooting

Common Questions and Answers

1. Cannot connect to Azure:
   • Ensure that your Azure account is correctly configured and the network connection is normal.
   • Check if the correct APIs and permissions are enabled.
2. Error: NO_TENANT:
   • Use the /azure/select_tenant {tenant_id} command to select a tenant.
3. Error: UNAUTHORIZED:
   • Ensure that the credentials you are using have sufficient permissions.
   • Check if Azure Active Directory application registration is enabled.

Authentication Issues

• Ensure you are logged in via Azure CLI (az login).
• Check the environment variables for the service principal.
• Verify that your Azure account has the necessary permissions.

Connection Issues

• Ensure that Claude Desktop is correctly configured.
• Check that the paths in the configuration file match the installation location.
• Ensure that no other instances are running.

Common Errors

• NO_TENANT: Use the 'Select Tenant' tool to choose a tenant.
• NO_CLIENTS: Ensure that initialization and authentication are correct.
• CODE_EXECUTION_FAILED: Check Azure permissions and connections.
