🚀 FL Studio MCP Project Introduction

This is an MCP (Music Context Protocol) server that connects Claude AI to FL Studio. We developed this project in three days and open-sourced it to explore its possibilities. The future development potential is limitless.

🚀 Quick Start

📦 Installation

Step 1: Download Files

You should see two main files:

• A folder named Test Controller.
• A Python file named trigger.py.

Inside the Test Controller folder, there is a file named device_test.py, which is used to receive information from the MCP server.

Place the Test Controller folder in the following path:

Image-Line/FL Studio/Settings/Hardware

Do not change the names of this file or folder.

Step 2: Set Up MCP for Claude

Follow the tutorial to set up the MCP server in Claude by editing the claude_desktop_config file. Tutorial Link

After completing the above steps, make sure to replace all the content mentioned in the tutorial from weather.py with trigger.py.

If the Hammer icon doesn't appear, you can open the Task Manager and force-close the Claude process. After that, the icon should appear.

Step 3: Set Up a Virtual MIDI Port

For Windows

Download and install LoopMIDI: LoopMIDI Download Link

After installation, use the "+" button to create a new port.

My configuration is as follows:

For Mac

Mac systems automatically provide MIDI ports, so no additional configuration is required.

Step 4: Set Up the MIDI Controller in FL Studio

Open FL Studio's "Options", find the "MIDI Settings" menu, select the previously created MIDI port in the "Input" tab, and set the controller type to Test Controller.

This step is crucial. Make sure the configuration is correct before proceeding to the next step.

Step 5: Install Dependencies

Activate your conda environment in the terminal or command prompt (if conda is not installed, install it first), then run the following commands:

conda activate your_env_name
pip install uv -trigger

Ensure that all dependencies are installed correctly.

💻 Usage Examples

Step 6: Verify the MCP Connection

Let Claude obtain the available MIDI ports. Copy the corresponding port name according to your system (Windows or Mac) and paste it into the default port location in the trigger.py file to replace it.

This step ensures that the communication between the MCP server and FL Studio runs smoothly.

Step 7: Make Music

Use MCP to send melody, chord, or rhythm instructions. Click on the instrument you want to record, and it will be recorded in the piano roll in real-time.

Here is an example of the prompt format:

"play_note C4_16th"

Step 8: Share Your Work

Upload your music works to our Discord community and exchange experiences with other users.
