🚀 The Ultimate Guide to Google Docs

This is a Minimum Viable Project (MCP) for interacting with Google Docs. It enables the Claude AI assistant to perform various operations through commands, including reading, writing, and modifying the content of Google Docs.

🚀 Quick Start

Clone the Repository

Run the following command in the terminal to clone this repository:

git clone https://github.com/your-username/google-docs-mcp.git

Install Dependencies

Navigate to the project directory and install all dependencies:

cd google-docs-mcp
npm install

🛠️ Setup

Prepare the credentials.json File

Create a credentials.json file and add the following content, replacing YOUR_PROJECT_ID with your Google Cloud project ID:

Enable Required APIs

Ensure the following APIs are enabled in the Google Cloud Console:

1. Document AI API
2. Drive API

Add Test Users

Add your email address as a test user in the OAuth consent screen.

Build the Project

Run the following command to build the project:

npm run build

Start the Server

Run the following command to start the MCP server:

node dist/server.js

💻 Advanced Usage Examples

Basic Usage

• Text Style: Use the applyTextStyle method to set the text "Important Section" to bold and red (#FF0000).
• Paragraph Style: Use the applyParagraphStyle method to center-align the paragraph containing "Title Here".
• Table Insertion: Insert a 3x4 table at index 500 in the document.
• Legacy Formatting: Use the formatMatchingText method to find the second occurrence of "Project Alpha" and set it to blue (#0000FF).

🔒 Security and Token Storage

.gitignore File

This repository includes a .gitignore file to prevent accidental commits of sensitive files (credentials.json and token.json). Do not remove these entries.

Token Storage

This server stores Google authorization tokens in the project root directory for simplicity. In a production environment or a more secure setting, consider using the system keychain, encrypted files, or other secret management services to store tokens.

🐞 Troubleshooting

Claude Displays "Failed" or "Unable to Attach"

• Check if the absolute path in mcp_config.json is correct.
• Ensure that npm run build has been successfully executed and the dist folder exists.
• Try manually running the command in the terminal: node /PATH/TO/YOUR/CLONED/REPO/mcp-googledocs-server/dist/server.js

Google Authorization Error

• Ensure that the correct APIs (Document, Drive) are enabled.
• Make sure your email address has been added as a test user in the OAuth consent screen.
• Verify the content of the credentials.json file.
